OSU Fires WR Coach Zach Smith
OSU Fires WR Coach Zach Smith
From Eleven Warriors:
The last remaining member of Urban Meyer's original Ohio State coaching staff is a coach for the Buckeyes no more.
Zach Smith, who was going into his seventh season as Ohio State's wide receivers coach, was fired on Monday, the university announced in a statement.
Smith's departure comes after his ex-wife, Courtney Carano Smith, filed a domestic violence protection order against him with Delaware (Ohio) Police on Friday. That came two days after he appeared in Delaware Municipal Court on a charge of criminal trespassing, to which he has pleaded not guilty.
According to a police report obtained by Eleven Warriors, Zach Smith was arrested and charged with felony assault in 2009, when he was an assistant coach at the University of Florida, after an altercation with his then-wife, who was three months pregnant at the time. Smith was handcuffed and arrested without incident, but Courtney declined to file charges at the scene.
Powell Police were also dispatched to Zach and Courtney’s home on Oct. 26, 2015 after Courtney reported "that a domestic incident happened last night at her home and that she has been a victim of sustained physical abuse by the suspect."
Smith had been Ohio State's wide receivers coach since 2012, Meyer's first season in Columbus. Smith had also been the Buckeyes' recruiting coordinator since 2015.
Smith is the first assistant coach that Meyer has ever officially fired in his head coaching career.
Before joining the Buckeyes, Smith was previously the wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator at Temple in 2011 and the wide receivers coach at Marshall in 2010. He previously worked for Meyer at Florida as a quality control coach from 2005-07 and as a graduate assistant in 2008 and 2009.
Smith is the grandson of former Ohio State coach Earle Bruce, who died in April at the age of 87.
According to Ohio State's statement, coaching staff adjustments will be announced at a later date.

While Smith has not been convicted, his ouster was almost mandatory since Urban Meyers holds his players to a "respect women" policy.
The ramifications may be disruption of recruiting and fall practice for the receiver corp.

Wow Urbs sure give him a lot of rope considering his history with women. I bet being Earle's grandson is the only thing that kept him this long.

Re: OSU Fires WR Coach Zach Smith
Sounds like after what Urban said more like an ex wife being mad at him for everything, Charges before were dropped with no supportive evidence. Kind of sounded like there needed to be a third independent party involved in the child exchange between parents. To prevent he said she said accusations.

MOST DEFINETELY!! the WR core should feed off this negative energy. Turn the people that say "they will not be as good" "or "will have to work harder" and use that to fuel their fire......plus the bucks didn't get a slouch in Brian Hartline. Don't see this as big as issue in July but as you say ; if happened in October. good gosh want a different impact it would've had.

Saw that. In today's environment, if true he's gone

Yep I am afraid of that too dazed! This could lead to something very very bad for the Bucks! I could see Meyer resigning any day.

Re: OSU Fires WR Coach Zach Smith
Nothing good is going to come out of this for the Buckeyes. And the worst case scenario isn't even that Meyer loses his job. What if the NCAA decides to get involved? Could they be on the receiving end of a Penn St. style penalty?

Re: OSU Fires WR Coach Zach Smith
If all the coaches knew about this, as Courtney Smith claims, will OSU be forced to release Urban and his entire staff?
This isn't looking good at all for Meyer. I think he has coached his last game at any level.
