Yesterday afternoon I made my first ever trip to Gates Mills to catch the playoff game between Visiting Columbiana Crestview and the home team Gilmour Academy Lancers. All I knew coming in was that the Lancers had a stud high school running back by the name of CJ Charleston and that they used him at every given chance.

Defense was the first unit to make a statement in this game, and it came from Crestview when Conner Hughes got to Charleston, for a loss of two yards. The Lancers offense slowly overcame that play and ended up getting a 24-yard field goal from Max Mendels to take a 3-0 lead, with 6:58 remaining in the opening quarter. The drive went for 37-yards and totaled 7-plays.

The Lancers defense would get to #15 Stephen Barr for a 4-yard loss, when Michael Cerer blasted into the backfield and threw the ball carrier down, to being up a punting situation for the Rebels, with 5:19 left on the clock.

Charleston would out run the Rebels defense and race 56-yards for another Lancers score, but a block in the back was called to negate the long run. The Lancers shrugged off the mistake and a short time later . they would get a22-yard run by quarterback Jack Krebs to go up 10-0, after the point after kick was successful.

The Lancers defense got a hold on fourth and short, when DiPuccio Armand stopped #8 Anthony Cusick on a QB run, with 11:17 left in the half. The Lancers loaded the box and the offense ran straight into the heart of the defense and it was not close to being a successful
call.

Charleston was off to the races again as he sprinted 45-yards for another score, as he left the defense standing in awe. His linemen did a fantastic job of just staying in the way of the defensive line and the Rebels linebackers did not seem to be in the play, this seem to be the theme all game long. The point after kick made this a 17-0 game, with 11:10 left in the half. A few plays before the score,Charleston had gone 49-yards for a score, but a holding call brought that score back.

Crestview would put together a nice little drive, with a 14-yard run from Dylan Huff and then a 16-yard run from Stephen Barr would set up a 22-yard run from Anthony Cusick. After the point after kick was made good by #17 Brandon Yanssens out of the hold of Barr, we had a 17-7 game with 6:31 left in the half.

Jack Krebs fielded the ensuing kickoff and would have scored on it, but he stepped out of bounds at the Rebels 24-yard line.
After getting the ball down to the 8-yard line Charleston would have had another touchdown, but another holding call negated the score. That was the third touchdown called back for the Lancers. Charleston would cruise in from 18-yards out as he just shook off the mistakes his teammates made, on his big runs. The point after kick made this a 24-7 game, with 4:31 left in the half.

The Rebels offense would get a nice 28-yard run from Dylan Huff but they could not do anything more with the ball after that, so the teams headed to the locker rooms, with the Lancers leading by 17-points.

The third quarter was all Lancers or Charleston, if you will. The running back would score on runs of five and one yard to put his team up 37-7. The Lancers defense also got a interception, when Aidan Muchnicki stepped in front of a Huff pass.

In the fourth quarter Charleston scored from 45-yards out to make this a 43-14 game. He would end his day with 283 yards on 33 carries totaling five touchdowns. Unofficially his team ran just 56-plays on the day, so one may see why I had said earlier, that he was a one-man show.

The Rebels Would score at the 6:10 mark,on a 42-yard run from Andrew Yanssens, after the point after kick we had a 43-14 game.
The Rebels defense got a strip, when #54 Justin Collins to the ball away from the Lancers ball carrier, he would take the ball down to the Lancers 39-yard line. From there the Rebels would get a 1-yard run from Yanssens to make this a 43-21 game, after the point after kick.
