The start of the season for the reigning NCAA runner-up is under a week away now. They will kick off the season as a team when they travel to Navy on Saturday.

Joey McKenna, a two-time All-American for the Buckeyes will travel to Denver on Friday to compete in the NWCA All-Star Classic, which has traditionally kicked off the season for years. He is the 22nd Buckeye to compete in the classic since 1970. The Classic is an annual event where there is just one match at each weight class that features a pair of two returning All-Americans. McKenna was selected to compete in the 149lb weight class against Kaid Brock from Oklahoma State.

The first rankings of the year have not come out yet, stay tuned for that.

Although it wasn't a full team competition, it was the All-Star Classic that Joey McKenna competed in, defeating #4 Kaid Brock from Oklahoma State. He did so by registering eight unanswered points to earn an 11-4 win.

The team will compete Saturday at Navy for their first competition of the season.

The Buckeyes kicked off the 2018-19 season with a bang, as the #2 Buckeyes hit the road and earned a victory at Navy, 28-9. It all started when OSU's Ke-Shawn Hayes (ranked #6 in the nation at 157lbs) earned a 7-5 decision. At 165, Kaleb Romero earned a 3-2 decision. Te'Shan Campbell (#13 at 174lbs) earned an 8-5 decision. Myles Martin (#1 at 184lbs) earned a big 21-6 technical fall. The first loss the Buckeyes took was at 197, when Kevin Snyder was pinned by Joshua Roetman.

Gary Traub earned a 3-2 decision win at 285lbs. The only other Buckeye to lose was Braken Mead, losing a 5-4 decision to Jacob Allen at 125lbs. Other Buckeyes to earn wins were #4 Luke Pletcher (133lbs), #2 Joey McKenna (141lbs) and #2 Micah Jordan (149lbs).

Next up, the Buckeyes will travel to the Ohio Intercollegiate Open next Sunday in Cleveland, hosted by Case Western.

OSU competed in the Ohio Intercollegiate Open yesterday in Cleveland, hosted by Cleveland State, and absolutely dominated the competition.

Nineteen Buckeye wrestlers entered the Ohio Intercollegiate Open’s Gold (top) Division. Nine walked away as champions after 13 reached the finals, setting up an Ohio State vs. Ohio State championship bout in four of 10 weight classes. Those coming back to Columbus with first-place accolades include: Luke Pletcher (133 lbs), Quinn Kinner (141 lbs), Micah Jordan (149 lbs), Ke-Shawn Hayes (157 lbs), Kaleb Romero (165 lbs), Ethan Smith (174 lbs), Gavin Hoffman (184 lbs), Kevin Snyder (197 lbs) and Chase Singletary (HWT). In addition, Brady Koontz (125 lbs) and Alex Felix (141 lbs) were crowned champions in their White Division weight classes.

Next up, OSU will have a busy weekend as they travel to California Baptist on Friday and Arizona State on Sunday.

The Buckeyes hit the road last night, and took on California Baptist, and destroyed the home team, 42-0. OSU won all 10 matches, and tacked on bonus points in 6 of those matches. This season represents the first season that Cal Baptist will compete in D1.

The bonus points tacked on for OSU included two major decisions, two tech falls and two pins.

Ohio State will stay out west for the rest of the weekend, as they travel to #11 Arizona State tomorrow.

The No. 2 Ohio State University wrestling team improved to 3-0 by winning six of 10 bouts in a top-10 tilt on the road at No. 10 Arizona State (1-2). The Buckeyes were without the services of All-Americans Myles Martin and Kollin Moore who spent the weekend competing for Team USA at the U23 World Championships in Romania. Moore came back to the States with a silver medal in-hand.

Ohio State will now have nearly two weeks off before they travel to Las Vegas to compete in the Cliff Keen Invite on November 30 - December 1.

Previewing what should be a solid weekend tournament for the Buckeyes. Ohio State is one of 42 teams, including more than 30 D-I schools, competing for the 2018 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational title (Nov. 30-Dec. 1). The Buckeyes enter as the two-time defending event champions, but face a loaded field in what is arguably this season’s most-competitive regular season tournament. Eleven of the Top-20 teams in the country will be in Vegas with north of 100 nationally-ranked wrestlers taking the mat.

Buckeyes lineup:
125lbs: Brakan Mead - SO (3-3)
133lbs: #5 Luke Pletcher - JR (7-0)
141lbs: #2 Joey McKenna - SR (3-0)
157lbs: #5 Ke-Shawn Hayes - JR (7-0)
165lbs: Kaleb Romero - FR (5-1)
174lbs: Ethan Smith - FR (9-2)
184lbs: #1 Myles Martin - SR (1-0)
197lbs: #3 Kollin Moore - JR (0-0)
285lbs: Chase Singletary - FR (9-0)

Match notes:

- Ohio State is the two-time defending Cliff Keen Champions
- Ohio State has won the team title five times since 2009
- Ohio State has finished in the top five, seven straight seasons

Weekend schedule:

Friday:
Noon - Early rounds
9pm - Quarterfinals and consolation rounds

Saturday:
Noon - consolation rounds
1pm - Semifinals, consolation and 5th-8th place matches
6pm - Finals and 3rd place matches

Interesting note on pound-for-pound rankings. FloWrestling has a pound-for-pound top 20 national ranking system. Of the top 20 overall wrestlers in the NCAA, OSU represents 20% of the wrestlers, with four in the top 20. Myles Martin (#8), Joey McKenna (#12), Kollin Moore (#15) and Micah Jordan (#18).

After day 1 of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite, the Buckeyes hold a lead that appears it will stand. The Buckeyes have 88 team points, leading second place Missouri (77.5 points) and Nebraska (64.5). Northern Iowa and Michigan round out the top five scoring teams after the first day. The majority of the Buckeye's wrestlers have advanced to the semifinals of competition: Luke Pletcher (133lbs), Joey McKenna (141lbs), Micah Jordan (149lbs), Myles Martin (184lbs), Kollin Moore (197lbs) and Chase Singletary (285lbs).

Other Buckeye wrestlers had a decent tournament. At 125lbs, Brakan Mead lost his first round match, came back in the wrestle backs to earn a victory, then ultimately lost and was eliminated in the second round of the wrestle backs.

Ke-Shawn Hayes is still in the hunt for a third place finish at 157lbs. Hayes won his first round match, then lost in the round of 16. He then proceeded to win both of his wrestle back matches on the day.

At 165lbs, Kaleb Romero cruised to a first round victory, but then fell in the round of 16. Before he could compete in the wrestle backs, he withdrew from the tournament.

Ethan Smith lost in the first round at 174lbs, won his first round of wrestle backs, then was eliminated from the tournament in the second round of wrestle backs.

The Buckeyes rolled to victory in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite, scoring 148 points, distancing themselves from second place Missouri, who scored 115.5 points. The Buckeyes have now earned their third consecutive team title in a row at this event.

Three OSU wrestlers earned championships in their individual weight classes: Joey McKenna (141lbs), Myles Martin (184lbs) and Kollin Moore (197lbs). Runner-up finishers for the Buckeyes included: Micah Jordan (149lbs). 3rd place finishers for OSU included: Luke Pletcher (133lbs). Ke-Shawn Hayes (157lbs) finished in 4th place. And Chase Singletary finished in 6th place due to a medical forfeit at heavyweight.

Next Sunday, Ohio State will get back into dual matches when they host Wisconsin.

Dominance was the key word for the Buckeyes on Friday night, as they traveled to Bloomington to take on Indiana, and came away with a 43-3 road victory over the Hoosiers. The Buckeyes only lost one match on the night, which was at 165.

Next up, Ohio State will host Michigan State on Sunday.

The Buckeyes keep rolling through the season undefeated, as they hosted and dominated Michigan State earlier today, 37-4. OSU nearly earned a clean sweep, winning every bout except at 125 (the Buckeyes weakest position).

Ohio State will have almost two weeks off before they host rival Michigan on the 25th.

Friday night ended in a stunning defeat for the Buckeyes at the hands of #5 Michigan in Value City Arena, 19-17. The Wolverines got out to a quick and early lead on the night, winning bouts at both 125 and 133, taking a 7-0 lead. Then came the Buckeye superstars, winning matches at 141 and 149, to take a 9-7 lead. Michigan then proceeded to win the next three matches at 157, 165 and 174 to take a 16-9 lead. OSU then won at 184 and 197 to take a 17-16 lead, heading into the final bout of the night.

The dual came down to the big boys at 285lbs, where Michigan's #7 Mason Parris defeated Ohio State's #17 Chase Singletary, 6-3 to take home the victory.

Ohio State will travel to Illinois next weekend to take on Illinois on Friday and Northwestern on Sunday.
