I eventually see another wave of consolidation in SE Ohio. Population is dropping, leaving smaller and smaller districts in its wake.

SAD BUT TRUE BUT, SMALL SCHOOL MAY FIND ITS ITSELF IN A POSTION THAT THEY CAN'T SUPPORT THEMSELF. THATS WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN. ESPECIALLY IF THEY DON'T HAVE THE ENROLLMENT TO SUPPORT THE OPERATING $$$$$ FROM THE STATE.

I never knew this, but in 1963, the State of Ohio wanted to consolidate Nelsonville, York, Glouster, and Jacksonville-Trimble into one school district. It was voted on in November of that year by all voters in all four districts and defeated soundly.

In Favor:
Athens County - 982
Hocking County - 96

Against
Athens County - 2,332
Hocking County - 426

Total For the Consolidation: 1,078 (28%)
Total Against the Consolidation - 2,758 (72%)

It was just a few years later when they consolidated into Nelsonville-York and Trimble.

Imagine how strong the sports teams would have been for that school over the past five plus decades!

Another tidbit of trivia............

When Nelsonville-York left the SEOAL for the TVC, the SEOAL actually passed a resolution thanking the Buckeyes/Greyhounds for their contributions to the league.

From the Nov. 10 1969 Logan Daily News........

"In other business, association members passed a resolution commending Nelsonville-York for its contributions to the SEO League through close relationships and excellent rapport; expressing their regrets at seeing Nelsonville-York leave the SEO League, but agreeing with the move for the school's sake, and wishing the Buckeyes the best of luck in their new league affiliation. Nelsonville-York will switch to the Tri-Valley Athletic Conference in 1970-71."

Likewise, if Trimble and NY consolidated today, the student enrollment would be about the same as it was for just Nelsonville-York back when Nelsonville consolidated with York in 1967.

Either of those scenarios show that an entire school district's worth of student enrollment has been lost in a little over half a century.

I don't think NY and T will ever consolidate......BUT if it were to happen. Would a new school need to be built? Would Trimble students be bused to NY? Where would a new school be built if that was the case? Do they create a completely different school or does NY take over Trimble and all of the red and grey become Buckeyes?

Again, I doubt this ever happens. But it's an interesting thought

They were supposed to consolidate about 10 or 15 years ago when Trimble was in emergency with their funds. Nelsonville said they would only consolidate if they kept the name Nelsonville. The state went to Trimble, The state told Trimble work out your money or be called Nelsonville. This is what really happened

In terms of spacing logistics, my guess is that if you take what is now the junior high portion of the NY complex and made it part of the high school complex, that would be enough for all high school students. In which case a new junior high would need built unless you shipped all Junior High students to the current Trimble High School. Then you could keep both elementary schools - NY and Trimble - as they are now. If average class sizes per teacher were as high today as they were back over 50 years ago, you could fit all of the current Trimble high school students into the current NY High School because the enrollment numbers would be about the same as they were for NY back in 1967. Smaller class sizes per teacher today would prevent that from happening though.

So my guess is we would see:
2 elementary schools (keeping the current Nelsonville-York Elementary and Trimble Elementary open and as they exist today)
1 junior high school (making the current Trimble High School the Junior High or building a brand new Junior High somewhere)
1 high school - (keeping the current Nelsonville-York High School and converting the current Nelsonville-York Junior High to become part of the high school)

It would be possible to do this without building any new buildings and just using what exists today. It would just be a matter of what do you call each school and the name of the school district.

I think if the schools originally consolidated back in 1963, the size of the school at that time would have been slightly larger than Athens High School is today (Athens has shrunk overtime as well, so Athens would have still been the bigger school of the two when they consolidated with The Plains and Chauncey in '67).

If you take the current OHSAA numbers for each school:

Nelsonville-York 135 boys, 136 girls
Trimble 95 boys, 86 girls

Combined totals 230 boys, 222 girls

This is slightly less than Vinton County High School

Vinton County 246 boys, 245 girls

So the NY/Trimble school would be the third largest in the TVC (behind Athens and Vinton County) and would most likely compete in the same division that Vinton County competes in for all sports.

Not having soccer is a good thing IMO. More young men seem to go out for football without it. Save on gas and wear and tear on bus transportation too. Gotta go with OSU22 on this Moon. Sorry buddy. NEXT.

For all the old timers on here, when did the SEOAL add the "A"? All the old articles on the SEOAL refer to it as the SEOL up to and including the time NY left the conference. Likewise, when did the TVC drop the "A"? When NY joined the TVC it was referred to as the TVAC - Tri Valley Athletic Conference in the newspaper articles I have seen.
