Union General John Sedgwick was a well-liked Civil War leader. On May 9, 1864, he was on horseback, surveying his, and the Confederates' lines, which were about 1000 yards apart. One of his men, in a trench, hollered at him, "Sir, the Johnnies have some awful good sharpshooters out there, same as us." Sedgwick replied, "Oh, pshaw! They couldn't hit an elephant at this dist..."

His words were cut short by his taking a Confederate minie ball below the left eye, killing him instantly.

Since I watched Tombstone saturday Ill put Doc Hollidays last words on here. “Well I’ll be d*****d. This is funny”. He said that as he was looking at his bare feet sticking out from the covers. He never figured he die with his boots off.

At Spotsylvania, Union general Sedgwick was on horseback, inspecting his lines & encouraging his men. The Confederate line was 200 yards away. One of his men shouted, "Sir! The Johnnies (slang for Confederates) have sharpshooters. You're in danger! Sedgwick replied, "Oh pshaw! They couldn't hit an elephant at that dist..."

Maybe they couldn't hit an elephant, since there were none there to hit, but one hit Sedgwick. His words were cut short by a Confederate bullet to the head. End of story.
