Defense wins titles, but you need an offense that can score and a special teams that can make a big block on a field goal or punt, also that could make a big return on a kickoff or punt.

All you need is an offense, a defense, and a kicking game which will allow you to score one more point than you give up on any given night...

Sp. Teams
here is an example
your team is down by say 6 and there is only 2 seconds left in the game and your are reciving either a kick or punt well now your depending on ther returner to score and win the game because you dont have time to get your offense out unless well a fair catch or touchback but still if i had a good return game i would return it and take a chance with that.
Winning field goal kicks? yep the pats did that to win titles

To be a good football team you have to be good at ALL aspects of the game.

You better have your special teams ready. You can lose or win a game so easily in special teams. One bad snap or blocked punt can completly change the momentem of a game.
One constent is hard hitting defense. There will be times when the weather can slow the offense but the defense can be the one constant.

Re: Most important: offence, defence, sp. teams
All three are important, but a great special teams can make or break your team. A big hit on the kickoff or at an opportune time during a punt can ethuse your defense to play better. Plus if you got a pretty good return man you have quick strike potential. Which can also help out your offense. So Id say special teams are just a step above in importance, but you do have to have a good D and O to take advantage of your special team plays.

Defense is most important, it stops the other team from scoring and puts you in good field position for your offense. Who needs a good offense if they are only 30 yards from scoring every time they get the

But if you have a good special team you can win the ball position game and they wont be 30 yards form scoring everytime. Tressel Ball Baby!
Re: Most important: offence, defence, sp. teams
You can argue for any of the three being the most important.
1. Offense - If you have the no matter what we will out score you mentality and capability.
2. Defense - If you keep the other team from scoring, it is hard to lose.
3. Special Teams - All of us have seen it where special teams have made a big impact on games.
Unless a team is a complete juggernaut in one of them, you need to have a balance in all. I am not saying that you have to be as good in each; rather, you need to be able to make up for the shortcomings and/or bad breaks in one aspect with your abilities in the other.
You may not have the best offense, but if your defense only allows 12 points a game, you are going to be OK.
And so on with the others!

but tressel ball doesn't work against a good sec style offense or defense

To really be a good team you must be balanced in all phases of the game. But you know what they say "Defense wins Championships".

But if you can throw up 60 points a game you don't need to worry alot about defense.
Re: Most important: offence, defence, sp. teams
As for the people saying special teams are the most important, I have to disagree. I have certainly seen it when special teams have made an impact on a game's outcome but special teams were not the only factor.
I have never seen more than four big special teams plays in a single game. So let's say your team averages four touchdowns a game on special teams. (This of course would never happen, but I'll use it for argument's sake). If your defense and offense are both garbage, you are going to end up with 28 points but are going to give up a lot more than that.
I, as well as others on here, have already said that there has to be some kind of balance.
