you don't see too many people running this, around here anyhow. A coach from the Fayetteville NC area, that I coached with, named Nathan Pittman has been the DC at several different Mid South Teams and has 6 State Championship Rings. He's ran this defense since his younger days(early 70's), stealing it from MAryland I think he said. Our 2 Tech's were studs for sure ,as Tobias said. Tough vs the pass, and a lot of today's formations take you out of the look with the spread formations. Definitely a good run stopper, especiallly if your 2 tech's get penetration and the LB's fly around and play downhill well. In the early 90's when we ran it, we saw the option and split veer most of the time, but did see a lot of passes too. We depended on great DB's and good pass rushers. We had a great FS that later played for Urban Meyer at Utah and then the Ravens. We also had two DI athletes at the 2 Techniques that went to NC State and UNC and ILB's that played at App State and Army. I'm sure that had something to do with our success.lol
Talk about some athletes down there. WOW We always consider NC a basketball state and did until I coached there. We had a boatload of DI kids. Alot didnt make the grades, but many did.

We ran this defense when I was in the eight grade, which was about 44 years ago.

Jerry Claiborne ran the wide tackle six while at Kentucky back in the '80's.

Looks like a 4-4 with the OLB's walked up on the line, Minford has been known to show this on occasion the past few years. Looks vulnerable to short crossing routes and slants, and some off tackle stuff if you pull a guard and have a good line, backside blocking would be critical against this defense.

That is true. With the, "Flavor of the month" offense currently being some version of the spread, it's pretty tough to be in this defense. Many teams are running a spread look in order to run the ball but you still have to cover whatever receivers the offense puts out there.

I'd say that you are correct about this. I know that the best defensive schemes that I've been associated with have also ironically been the ones that had the best football players on the roster. 8)

^^^^Yeah, thanks to the Rich Rodriguez's and the Urban Meyers' of the world.lol
Gotta love that spread and run philosophy, but as we saw this year w/ RR at Michigan, you've gotta have the kids to do it. He sure did miss Pat White.
I coached against Rich when he was just starting to develop his offense at Glenville. Man, it was difficult back then in the late 90's. We never saw much of that. They had HUGE linemen that would just shield the d-linemen and little scat backs. I remember scouting him once and scratching our haeads as a def. staff. We were like, man, he's in quads and trips 80% of the time and ran the ball 80% of the time.It just wasn't common then, but it worked.made me crazy when they were really good.

Exactly what I was thinking this is what I did coaching youth football. If you have the kids who can make a quick decision at both outside backer (DE in this set up) you can pretty much shut down all but the best run teams. If they try and throw they better have a quick release and not stutter in their drop or it's crunch time.

Very similar to the Split 44. Georgia ran this, as well as Maryland, in the 70's and early 80's. A few high school teams in Southern Ohio took the secondary coverage from Georgia and put it with their 44 defenses.

I actually think Bear Bryant used this in his UK days, way back when.
