The farthest thing the unaided eye can see is the Andromeda galaxy, which is some 2.5 MILLION light years from us. To locate it, find the familiar constellation of Cassiopeia, which appears as a "W", or an "M", or the symbol for a person in a wheelchair, depending on the angle yo...

Re: Unusual Facts Thread

Most stars of most constellations have nothing to do with each other, and if we were able to travel near to these constellations, we wouldn't recognize them, as their stars are not actually close together. For instance, Dubhe, the star at the outer lip of the Big Dipper, is 105 light-years from eart...

The Zamboni ice-resurfacer seen in ice-skating rinks everywhere was invented by Frank Zamboni (1901-1988 in 1949. Its main refinement has been to make all-electric models which don't release fumes inside ice-rink enclosures. The machines are sold worldwide. The only other thing Zamboni makes or lice...

The battle of New Orleans WAS actually fought before the war ended. While a TENTATIVE deal was reached in Ghent, Belgium Dec. 24, 1814, it didn't end the war cuz the respective govts. hadn't ratified it. So, the battle was fought in jan. 8, 1815, the treaty wasn't ratified till Feb. 2. Thus, the his...

What's a Slobbovian? Anyone who's NOT YOU, for comedy purposes. If you're black, it could be anyone not black. if you're Mexican, it could be anyone not Mexican. If you're baptist, it could be anyone not baltist, except Moslems, who should be called what they are in jokes, far as I'm concerned. Slob...
