Looks like the Burg has an 8 game winning streak vs. the Trojans, including the back to back tourney wins in 06 and 07. As far as watching the Trojans win at the Burg, looking at the series record, I think the 79 game was at WHS, which was the last time Portsmouth won at Wheelersburg. I do believe I...

drrabbit: Thanks for the info on the series between WHS and PHS. Portsmouth was in the big school classification prior to 1978, and the first meeting in the postseason between the two was the 1978 sectional, which was a classic. There were 3 classes between 1970-1977, and PHS was AAA. Before 1970, t...

Ironman92: Joe Suboticki, Allan Hatcher, Mike Haley, Jim Rhea, and Rick Hopkins are the coaches who made it to the district since 1990. I know that Portsmouth is #1 is the SE district with 34 district titles, and Wheelersburg is tied with SE Ross for second with 15 each. And those figures are all ti...

Portsmouth appeared in the district in 1990, 91, 92, 93, 94, 97, 98, 99, 00, 01, 02, and 04.....for a total of 12 times. The Trojans won the district in 1990, 1991, 1994, 1999, and 2001. They also advanced to the district final 4 straight years from 1999-2002. Portsmouth's total number of district a...

A lot of great players down through the years for Wheelersburg......almost impossible to pick the greatest that I've seen, but the most dramatic moment in the regular season between PHS and the Burg was Andrew Burleson's dunk with 5 seconds to go to give the Pirates a 52-51 win at WHS in 2002.

Tom Barrick of Wheelersburg has 3 state appearances in 12 years, which is very impressive and puts him in elite company statewide, but I still think what Van Matre has done is remarkable. I just don't think that he has had as much talent to work with as Barrick has had. Van Matre also lost 3 regiona...

yabbadabbadoo: The 1987 game was the sectional final, which was won by Portsmouth 59-54. The sectional seeding that year was totally unfair, as the Burg was 16-4 and Portsmouth was 17-3, and yet the 2 teams met in the sectional. Wheelersburg and Portsmouth would not meet again in the regular season ...

Rick Van Matre of Greenfield McClain is my #1. Very simple.....for over 25 years, he has been doing more with less than anybody else in SE Ohio. And I believe that he has a winning record head to head vs. virtually every other coach listed that he has coached against. McClain has I believe at least ...

The last actual game in "old" PHS gymnasium was against Ironton, while the "unofficial" last game was against Rock Hill. The RH game was on a Saturday night, with last game ceremonies, and then the following Tuesday IHS closed out the gym.

The Trojans lost both games. :(

maltese falcon: The FACT that I stated was that Anthony Williams would be missing the game vs. the Burg. I then stated an OPINION that I felt the Chillicothe game would have been closer, and then I stated another OPINION that we would have beaten South Point. Another FACT that I stated was that we w...

Two of the young up and comers in SE Ohio include freshman Andrew Bendolph and sophomore Forrest Johnson of Portsmouth. Bendolph has been in double figures in 6 or 7 straight games, averaging around 12 ppg, while Johnson has been averaging around 12 ppg a game for the improved Trojans. GO TROJANS!!!

When Portsmouth gets 6-6 junior Anthony Williams back in mid-January from a foot injury, the Trojans will be a better team. Simply put, his 19 ppg and 15 rpg have been missed, and against the better teams on our schedule his absence has really been felt. Coach Shoemaker changed the Trojans after 4 g...

Portsmouth also has a game vs. Athens the night before the Burg game. So both teams will be playing Friday-Saturday. I know that Wheelersburg has won the last 7 against PHS, and lead the overall series. This is yet another game in which the absence of Anthony Williams, 6-6 junior, will hurt the Trojans. Against the good teams on our schedule, we need all the bullets in the gun to have the best chance to win. Anthony's 19 ppg and 15 rpg have been sorely missed, even though the Trojans have won sever...

Scioto County has 11 high schools, and that is too many for a county with a population of about 77,000. People complain about lack of funding for education but are stubborn to move on the issue of consolidation. I am not a economic guru by any means, but I would think that fewer schools would be mor...

I have talked several times with Coach Shoemaker and AD Tom Grashel about getting Ashland back on the schedule.....I always liked playing the Tomcats, a very old and competitive rivalry. I also would like to see Greenup Co. back on the slate; the 2 schools are just across the river from each other.....

One of the greatest qualities about Coach Joe Suboticki was his ability to motivate his kids to play hard.....under his tenure, the Trojans seldom came out flat, and always seemed to play with a chip on their shoulder. They consistently would play tough defense, and Suboticki's press created many of...

It would be a very good game; of course I would pick the Trojans to win.....by about 10 points. Dominic McKinley would most likely be guarding Seth Dawes rather than Chambers.....David Barnes would be assigned Chambers, and would give Ray all he could handle.....the 6-5 Barnes went against quite a f...
