Do you have to win an event to earn all league honors?

I hope not but some leagues do that.

Logan looked dominate today and clearly were the class of the league. To bad the weather didn't cooperate, but there were some good times. Congratulations to the Chillicothe girls for winning their first League meet since 1984. Megan Osborne has a chance to have an historic career on the track. She is special.

My understanding is yes, you have to win the event to be all-league in an individual event. I am not sure if winners of relay events are all-league.

Individual event winners, including relays, are all-league.

The coaches are looking at that specific issue of a really talented athlete who is stuck in the same event of an excetional one.

Faulks from Jackson would fit that catagory. 3 second place finishes in the 100, 200, and 400. She is a special athletes and deserves recognition

What do other leagues do for all league

if you can be a football or basketball player and your team goes with out a win and makes all league you should beable to make all league in track if you are a top scorer.

Its is possible to be the top scorer in a league meet and not win a event.
You can even have a team win your league and have no first places-

I argued this in my league when I coached track. To have an athlete score 30 points in the league meet and not be all-league is just dumb.

How many girls were involved in the SEOAL Meet? 100? and the athlete with the 2nd most points is not included in your honor of the top athletes of the league. Open your eyes.

on the girls side

Osborne 32 points 1st 100, 200 400 and on 2nd 4 x 400 relay
Metzler 31 points 1st hj, lj, 2nd 300 hurdles 6th 100
Fulks 30 points 2nd 100, 200, 400 3rd long jump

I believe Fulks deserves to receive an all league plaque and i hope that this issue does get changed.

I think there should be a change in the way it is selected also, but being devils advocate....

Knile Davis 1322 yds rushing, 6.5 ypc, 13 TD

He was second team all-SEC because someone at his position (like event in track) was better. Doesn't mean he wasn't good, just not the best in his specific area.

There is no way to go about it without someone being left off the list that is very deserving.

Everyone shouldnt get an award for being good. Compete heads up in an individual sport. Winner gets it, others dont. That is the way it should be. You want to be first team, then get first.

Tough Call on this one.... But here is my two cents

Person X- Wins Discus and takes 8th in the Shot Put-11 Points
Person Y- Gets 3rd place in Both Shot and Disc-12 Points

One is all league, but the other scores more points. You get the personal satisfaction knowing you helped your team out more than the all league guy.

The only way to fix this would be tweaking the criteria just a tad. Keep the All league status for the winners of the Events and then let the coaches vote for one person on the boys side and girls side to be an all leaguer that didn't win an event.

"Everyone shouldn't get an award for being good" "Compete heads up in an individual sport"

WHAT? How long has track been an individual sport?

I'm not talking about the 5-6 year old soccer leagues giving out trophies to the 4th place team in a 5 team league. The SEOAL and other leagues honor all-league in track and field. This meet awarded a boys team champion and and a girls team champion....how do you get those team championships????? You score the most points......without any possible defense by the other schools. So points in track are as important than any individual stat in any other sport. In most track leagues the 4th best runner of any winning relay team earns all-league....and scores 2 1/2 points. I don't have a big problem with this but often teams that know they can't win the league will stack a relay team to get 4 all-league athletes instead of placing them in individual events and scoring more points...thus causing fewer team points at the end of the meet.

Why can't the track coaches hold a meeting to decide?

Can you imagine a basketball player having the 2nd most points in the league....the 2nd most assists, the 2nd most steals and the 3rd most rebounds and then not make all-leauge...well no you couldn't because it would never happen.

Oh it just an award...you have to cut it off somewhere. Yes you do...but not after the top 2.

Congrats to Metzler on her oustanding meet as well. An extremely deserving all-league honoree....even if she would've finished 2nd in the LJ and HJ.

Oh it just an award...you have to cut it off somewhere. Yes you do...but not after the top 2.
1st place should get the first place award! Why in the world should third place get a first place award?

Why can't the track coaches hold a meeting to decide?
Because VERY often, this just becomes a political thing and little johnny is going to end up getting his awards because mommy and daddy will make a stink if he dont.
You run the race to determine the awards.
Why run a race then let the coaches go figure out the awards?
With the coaches talking it will end up being,"my little johnny has the flu today and his uncle died last week. He really is better today just wasnt his day. He deserves the award cause he is a good kid!"
You know what, run the race and eliminate all the other crap that tears apart high school athletics!
