Hall of Fame Class for 2021 Announced by Cambridge Athletics
Continuing to recognize and showcase a strong tradition of athletic excellence, the 2021 Hall of Fame Class has been announced by the Cambridge Bobcat Hall of Fame Committee. This year’s group consists of six individuals and two teams. It is with great pride and excitement that the Cambridge Athletic Department will host its’ annual hall of fame weekend September 9-10 to welcome the following inductees along with family and friends:
Natalie Dunn – graduated from Cambridge High School in 2000. She earned eleven varsity letters: four in basketball, four in track and field and three in volleyball. Natalie became the first Lady Bobcat to score over 1,000 points and continued her (basketball) playing career at Wright State . Along with her athletic accomplishments, Natalie was also an excellent student who was voted class president all four years and chosen as homecoming queen.
Sean Mahley – graduated from Cambridge High School in 2007. Sean was a tremendous multi-sport athlete earning several accolades in: baseball, football and wrestling where he was named team captain in all three sports. After graduating from CHS, Sean continued his baseball career at the University of the Cumberlands where he was named to the all conference team three years in a row. After college, Sean played professional baseball for the Schaumburg Boomers before moving on to play affiliated baseball signing a contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2013.
Jay Semke – graduated from Cambridge High School in 1985 with baseball career records in most runs scored and most stolen bases. After graduating high school, Jay was drafted by the Cleveland Indians. Putting a professional career on hold, Semke went on to play baseball at The Ohio State University where he was named All Academic Big 10 for three years as well as the 1987 All Big 10 (second) Team and the 1988 All Big 10 (first) Team . Upon graduating from OSU, Jay played a season of professional baseball for the Cincinnati Reds affiliate in the Gulf Coast League.
Jameel Turner – graduated from CHS in 1996 where he was voted most talented and top athlete in his class. Jameel excelled in multiple sports including: baseball, basketball, football and track and field. During his senior year, Turner was named co-captain of the football team and went on to rush for over 1,000 yards and accumulate over 3,800 all purpose yards for his career which saw 33 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. Along with his impressive accomplishments on the gridiron, Jameel was also a key member of the basketball teams that went to the state final four in back to back years (1995 and 1996). At the conclusion of his four years at Cambridge, Jameel signed to play football at the University of Toledo where he had a successful career as a defensive back and punt returner for the Rockets.
Kirk Wetherell – Before graduating high school in 2008, Kirk was awarded twelve varsity letters including the Ray Voltz award for Best Male Senior Athlete. Among his many accomplishments, Kirk was named to the first team all conference for three consecutive years in both football and wrestling. However, baseball may have been Wetherell’s strongest performance having lettered four years in a row; being selected first team all conference his junior and senior year and capping off a stellar career playing in the OVAC All-Star Game and being a member of the first baseball team in Cambridge history to qualify for the regional tournament.
Brad Wright – During his high school career, Brad became one of the most successful golfers in the history of the program. In addition to being named first team all league for three consecutive years as well as player of the year in the East Central Ohio League (ECOL) his senior year, Wright also led the golf team to state tournament appearances his junior and senior year while earning First Team All Ohio (both years) as well as being named to the Academic All Ohio Team. After graduation, Brad went on to earn all conference honors at both the University of Akron and The Ohio State University. After earning his degree from OSU, Brad went on to play both amateur and professional golf including advancing to the US Open Sectional Qualifier three times.
2011 Girls Basketball Team – Coached by Dan Linscott, the 2011 Lady Cats made history by being the first girls basketball team to advance to the state tournament final four after amassing an impressive 22-5 record including an undefeated league record of 12-0. Among this talented group were five all league/conference players. Members of this record setting team include: Brandy Simpson, Candice Bumgarder, Molly Ritz (2nd team All Ohio), Abby Wetherell (honorable mention All Ohio), Kayla Francis, Keirsten Taylor, Kayla Billos, Paxton Winston, Abbey Seckman, Hallie Stocker, Lexy Baker, Mariah Rossiter, Mallory Taylor, Ashley Dalton, Amy Zalenski-Trainer, Kayla Matesick-Assistant Coach, Lacie Baker-Assistant Coach, Morgan McClain-Assistant Coach and Dan Linscott-Head Coach (2011 Division II Coach of the Year).
1988 Boys Basketball Team – The squad that started the unrivaled run of five state final four appearances in twelve years, Coach Gene Ford and this team saw an amazing run that ended in a 20-5 record including a dominating win in the regional final game dubbed the “Guernsey County War” against a talented Meadowbrook Colts team. Along with their run to the final four, the State in 88 team is the only boys final four team that has five players earning individual spots on the program’s record board. Members of this historic team include: Kurt Froelich, Jeff Paden, Darin Ford, Jay Maximo, Price Winston, John Valentine, Brian Taylor, Matt Oess, Tom Payton, Aaron Quinn, Mike Ford (1st team All Ohio and Division II Player of the Year), Scott Mack, Tom Gadd-Manager, Jeff Allen-Manager, Amy Glosser-Trainer, Tracy Lingafelter-Trainer, Dan Watkins-Assistant Coach and Gene Ford-Head Coach (1988 Division II Coach of the Year).
