I went to school with Dennis and Jimmy Morris both great running backs.

Jermon Jackson

What can you say, unbelievably fast and had some great moves. One of the best to ever come out of Ironton. I wish I had some career stats on him.

Been a few years back, but how about throwing Rick Boykin(sp?) in the mix.

Rick or do you mean Rodney Boykin, Rodney was a great one also.

Rodney Boykins Senior season (78) he ran for 777 yards and 25 TD's in 9 games.

The Tigers finished the season 9-0 and missed the playoffs with arguably the best team the Fighting Tigers ever had.

It must have been Rick, from the late sixties. He was one tough customer.

Clyde, "the glide" Nelson, Dennis Bacon, Rod Boykin, Mike Smith, Delandual Conwell, Jermon Jackson, Jason Harmon, Bobby Brice,

great fullbacks in Tim Hodges, John Pemberton, Heath Brownstead, Michael Henry, maybe JJ King?

Best Ironton High running back.... George McAfee

George is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. George had world-class speed and could have been a star in any NFL era.

Best end at Ironton High... Coy Bacon. I am in the process of writing an online tribute story about Coy Bacon. It's over 4,600 words so far. I have some great stuff in the article about his playing days at Ironton High...plus a few photos. I hope to get it online in the next month or so.

Alphonso Johnson....How could I have forgotten him? When i was about 9, dad and i watched him play a game at Athens, i believe. I think he took a kickoff and a punt back for TD's. He looked like Jim Brown to me, when i was 9.

I don't know who the best was, but the best backfield I saw at Ironton was Conwell and Brownstead...both punishing, bruising runners.

After looking back over this thread now, there has been alot of great backs.

How about Terry "the cat" Royal and Gabriel Lewis both on the 79 State Championship team.
