This one is a toss up, IMO.

Should be a great game

Did Valley scrimmage Fairland ? Meigs played both Fairland and CG and lost to both how does Valley compare to Fairland and Meigs.

Valley did scrimmage Fairland and they looked pretty solid against the Dragons. I'm almost positive that Valley outscored them by 2 TDs... I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. And Valley was able to contain Fisher pretty well. I know that CG is a different style of team, but Valley's strength is in their skill players. Great speed at wideout and they cover in the secondary as well as any HS team around.

I can see this one being within a TD at halftime, then the Hornets gradually pull away by more and more. The final score will look lopsided, but it should be a very entertaining game.

Valley - 21

Coal Grove - 40

I can't see Valley being three td's better than last year, but I have seen CG and I believe they are 3 to 4 td's better than last season. Just ask meigs who only gave up 7 points to the hornets last season and gave up 44 this year with almost the same team. Last season cg 31-8 winners don't know if Valley has gotten that much better to reach the point where coal grove has improved to this season. CG probably won't beat valley as bad as paint valley if they get the chance due to valley remaining on future schedules paint valley dropped CG before the game last week maybe a message was sent. Two good traditions in high school ball anything happens. good luck to both.

That's an excellent point about the Meigs score!
CG forced a lot of turnovers in last year's Valley game. If the defense plays as well in this year's match-up, the Indians will be in for a VERY long night because Coal Grove will score quite a few points regardless of how well their defense or Valley's offense plays.
I have a feeling Coal Grove will key in on Utley again. Last year, the Hornets held him to 7-17 passing for 66 yards and sacked him for a safety.

Coal Grove leads the series 5-2:

1964: W, 36-22

1965: W, 14-6

2000: W, 24-12

2001: L, 0-48

2006: L, 6-20

2007: W, 27-12

2008: W, 30-8

*Bold denotes a home game; Coal Grove has never lost to Valley at home.

Also, I'd like to add that this year's Coal Grove team has already managed to break a few school records that I've dug up. . .

First of all, Coal Grove put up 44 points against Meigs in week 1. That's the 2nd-most points scored by any Hornet team on opening night. The record is 49 points, set by the 1978 team in their 49-13 thrashing of Oak Hill on Sept. 1st, 1978.

The 2009 Hornets have broken the record for highest average points scored in the first two games of the season. Their average of 51.0 (44 v. Meigs & 58 v. Paint Valley) broke the record previously held by the afore mentioned 1978 squad which was 48.0 (49 v. Oak Hill & 47 v. Portsmouth West).

The '09 team set the record for most points scored in the 2nd game of the season (58).

The 58-point effort against Paint Valley also broke the record for most points scored in an away game.

Congrats!

CG had better spy the Valley QB or he will tuck it and run. Very quik and smart player. Good luck to both teams. I think this game will be closer than most may think.

If CG beat Valley by 22 last yr and are 3 to 4 td's better this year then this should be a cupcake for Hornets. CG 49 Valley 3. CG should be able to rest strarters in second half as they get ready for real test next week vs Minford.

Based on what is being posted here, Valley should just stay home and get ready for week 4.

Valley will be ready to play. If they take care of the ball, tackle well, and protect the quarterback, they can win the game.
