Heavy damage at Athens High School
I just received two texts from sports editor Kevin Wiseman at Athens Messenger.
He was at Athens soccer match. The press box at Rutter Field is completely destroyed and most of the field is damaged. Athens High School was in fact hit as well, as was The Athens Messenger building.

We've been getting text as well from The Plains. It sounds really bad. Let's keep all those folks in our thoughts.

My thoughts are with the folks in athens county right now. I hope nobody was seriously injured and that everyone was able to make it to safety.

I'm sorry to hear that, man. Did the tornado touch down anywhere else in athens county besides the plains?

Here's a link to the story and some pictures of the High School and football field. Looks like lots of damage. Hopefully no one was seriously injured or killed.

I know it seems silly to think about sports in the midst of such utter destruction but I can't help wondering what Athens will do for home football games the remainder of the year? Might a neighboring school offer their facilities for Saturday games?

Re: Heavy damage at Athens High School
I don't think people should have to apologize for asking football related questions and discussing topics that we all know don't matter as much in the grand scheme of life. After all, this is a sports forum and that's what is done here. In times like these we should be thankful for what we can continue to do (such as football) and do them with great joy, remembering how blessed we are. And remembering how quickly it can all be taken away. The perspective we have been given is amazing. And the fact is, this community has become very strong in the past few years due to sports. So we ought not separate this tragedy from football. Just my opinion.
To answer the question, no one knows as of yet. Youth football will more than likely be played in Chauncey at the old football field behind the elementary school (that's where they are playing Alexander this Sunday). No word on where the rest of the teams (Varsity football, JV football, boys and girls soccer, etc.) will play their home games.
