To an extent it does have to do with defense. Yea obviously teams are trying to get the ball back to their offense and swing the tide of the game kicking it onside and most high school kick returns are returned to the between the 30-35 yard line so teams are only giving up 15-20 yards of field position when they do it. Teams aren't going to constantly kick onside kicks if they don't have a good defense that can bow its neck and defend a short field and Wheelersburg's defense has done a fine job of that all year.
