WEEK 10: JACKSON (9-0) at GALLIA ACADEMY (4-5)
Re: WEEK 10: JACKSON (9-0) at GALLIA ACADEMY (4-5)
Remembering 63 years ago on Oct. 31, 1951
I was a senior at Gallia Academy High School. The Blue Devils were scheduled to play an SEOAL game at Middleport.
It started raining on our way to the game. By the time we got dressed, it was snowing. By 7:30, the old Middleport Field was covered with snow.
School officials used coal ashes to remark the field. Gallia's Tommy Thompson (later a retired common pleas court judge in Franklin County) raced more than 70 yards on the first play from scrimmage. It began to get colder as the game progressed.
I remember Bob Ashley, a Yellow Jacket sophomore and later a grid coach at Southwestern High School near Cadmus in Gallia County, was playing an offensive end across from me and snot was frozen on his face. It almost made me sick. GAHS went on to win the game, 19-0.
The following day, members of the Blue Devils team went to Dr. J. Gordon Gibert's office on the 400 block of Third Ave., for frost bite treatment (later the home of Dr. James L. Dailey and now the home of GAHS Athletic Hall of Famer Jimmy Noe.)
However, one week later in November, GAHS ended its 1951 season with a 61-18 win over Pomeroy. The game was played in 75-degree temperature. One of the Purple Panthers that year was Guy Guinther, now a resident of Gallipolis and a retired grocer.
Hope the weather is not that bad this Friday for Gallia's home final against unbeaten Jackson.

Good luck to both teams. Stay healthy, show good sportsmanship, and ( especially the seniors on both teams ) have fun. And as always GO RED !!!

Initially, that may be true, but I would expect that to change quickly after a couple series. Unless the radar changes drastically, most games on grass will not be pretty tonightIronman92 wrote:I hear the ground conditions might be way better than expected for this titanic struggle.

Good luck to the big blue tonight. Can't ask for anything more than playing for a league championship. It's a special group of seniors who never quit. You have told our young ones very well. Thank you.

Reason I felt this is Jackson's best team in history is because of strength of schedule. Impressive wins over
West Jefferson, Columbus Bishop Ready, The Burg, Logan and Ironton.

We have had light rain around Gallipolis most of the day. Can't believe we have had 4 home games and four rains each Friday. On the road 6 gamers, weather was perfect. Maybe someone is trying to tell us something.
