8/30 Week 1 Piketon @ Waverly

Post by eagles73Taylor »

The battle for county bragging rights on the line, Piketon travels the 4 miles to tsun for the week 1 mathcup with Waverly. Waverly owns the overall series with 24-6 record, but Piketon has rattled off 3 straight wins over the Tigers. Piketon lost 15 seniors from last years 9-3 team, while Waverly also took a hit to graduation in some key positions as well. This game has not been a blowout in either direction since the series renewed in 08', and I don't expect anything different in this years matchup.

I cant say much about the Tigers, but Piketon does return some nice skill players. 6'4" Jeremy Farmer, who against Minford and St. Clairesville came on as Piketons go to man. He will have to step up and lead this years Streaks. Should be a fun matchup, good luck to both, but Lets Go Streaks!

Ha! Just as it should be. Both sides saving the comments and getting ready for the game. Here's hoping both teams stay healthy and play up to their potential. Go Redstreaks!

Gonna take Waverly in this one. Only by a TD cause this game is always close. Them Streaks lost alot of senior leadership and talent. Hard to replace an Ike Brabson too. Good luck to both teams. I will be paying close attention since we play Piketon week 2.

I was going to pick Piketon to win this, but after seeing the scrimmage in Lucasville. I'm going to have to say Waverly will pull out the win. Piketon has some good looking athletes but it looks like they may go through a few growing pains this year.

Piketon fans bring your lawn chairs and step ladders. There are no seats for the visiting team. :122246

The visitors bleachers had to be torn down and work is being done to install new ones. That will not be in place until week 4 when the Tigers return from a two game road trip. Concrete is being poured tomorrow but temporary bleachers cannot be placed on that. I did hear some temporary bleachers will be brought in and placed at different locations but it won't be enough, just as Piketon's bleachers aren't enough for Waverly fans when the Tigers travel south. People stand along the fence every year anyway - just have to make do.

Temporary bleachers are being brought in from various locations. It won't be enough. People stand on the track at Piketon every year, people stand at the fence at Waverly every year this year will be no different.

I agree with you nutron. They lost a lot last year. They won't be down long.

The Pike County rivalry game should be a dandy. Piketon will be looking to fill some holes and keep the bragging rights while Coach Crabtree and the Tigers begin a new era and hopefully back to their winning ways of old. Good luck to both schools and hopefully the pads are cracking without any injuries to the young men of the county.

Waverly personnel have done a nice job getting everything ready for tonight's game considering the situation with the visitors bleachers, etc.

Word is the Waverly band will be sitting in the end section of the home bleachers to give Piketon fans all of the bleachers in the end zones in addition to the temps on the visitors side. There is a ton of standing room available as well.

Both gates will be open, at the gym and beside the field house. Not sure if tickets will be sold at the gate beside the field house or just open for presale ticket holders only.

Athletic Boosters concessions and restrooms will be open in the gym and the Band Boosters concession stand will be open on the visitors side.

Sorry but I didn't write down Piketon's score but it was 7-0 at halftime.
Waverly scored on a 2 yard keeper from QB R.J. Perkins with 6:30 to play in the 3rd and Diener added the PAT to knot the score at 7. That's the way it stood at the end of the 3rd with Waverly at the Redstreak 40, 1st and 10.
The Tiger drive came down to 4th and 3 at the Redstreak 5 with 9:10 to play and a Waverly timeout.
After the timeout Amin Gilbert took the handoff off the left side and scampered into the end zone. Dieners PAT put the Tigers up 14-7.
Piketon put together a nice drive and faced 4th and 1 at the Waverly 4 with 4:20 remaining. After a timeout Piketon first tried to draw the Tigers offside but after that was unsuccessful attempted to run the play but the snap sailed over Farmers head and the Tigers took over at their own 14.
Waverly drove to the 42 and then suffered a 3 yard loss on 1st down and Piketon called timeout with 2:00 to go. Another 2 yard loss back to the 37 saw Waverly with a 3rd and 15 with 1:52 to play and another Piketon timeout.
Waverly attempted to pick up the first down on a pass which was incomplete stopping the clock at 1:48 to play.
On the ensuing punt Perkins was roughed giving the Tigers a first down at the Redstreak 48. An unsportsmanlike penalty was then levied on the Redstreak bench moving the ball to the 33.
Amin Gilbert ran to the Redstreak 29 with 1:22 remaining and Piketon used their last timeout. A couple more runs got the ball to the Redstreak 26 where they took over on downs with 6.5 seconds to play.
One last Piketon pass attempt was picked off by Gilbert who could have taken it to the house but ran out the clock and took a knee.

Congratulations to Coach Crabtree on his first Head Coaching victory and to the Tigers for fighting back to win this one.

Very hard fought game by both teams!
