The Buckeyes, one of just 31 teams across all divisions to go 10-0, are in the playoffs for the 17th time. The Buckeyes are 8-15 all-time in the postseason, winning the 1981 state title.

Shadyside has the most playoff victories in Ohio without ever winning a state title at 29. The Tigers are in the playoffs for the 19th time, going 29-18 all-time in the playoffs. The Tigers have appeared in two state title games.

The Friday forecast shows rain ending at noon, and temps in the 50s. I'll take it if that holds up!

Shadyside is a run heavy team. Wing-T type of offense. They don't throw very much at all. I haven't seen very much, but in the little I've seen they are still a pretty disciplined team.

So if we stay home and tackle we should be fine..Vinton used to run something along that type of offense.

Vinton ran the wish bone for a while.
Our Dline will have to play solid and if they do we should be fine. They are a good team. Very consistent year in and year out.
Them and Trimble have had some nail biters in the playoffs.

Shadyside runs the I and pro style formations the majority of the time except in obvious passing downs and that's when they will line up in the gun. They have a big line and two brusing running backs in Banco and Krupa who are both at or near 1,000 yards for the season. Each are around 6'0/6'2 and 210-225lbs. They don't have a ton of team speed but they execute what they do flawlessly. Their QB has a solid arm but is a bit wild at times. They prefer to only throw 10-15 times a game. Their weakness comes back to the team speed. If it's turned into a track meet then it's hard for them to keep up. Defensively they are sound in the front 7 and weak in the secondary. They tend to take bad angles when tackling because they simply have a hard time judging the speed of the runner. The teams that have had success this year in Shadysides wins and losses have spread them out and basically have done what they wanted.

That should play into NY hands. They like to spread it out and they have speed. NY 35-14

If Shadyside's biggest weakness is playing teams with speed, it could be a long night for the Tigers.

Buckeyes draw Tigers in Region 23 bout

By Kevin Wiseman Messenger sports editor

The Ohio High School Athletic Association playoffs sometimes match up schools that are miles away, and otherwise would never meet on the gridiron.

The No. 1 seed Nelsonville-York Buckeyes will host the No. 8 Shadyside Tigers in a Division VI, Region 23 quarterfinal at Boston Field. The kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

The Buckeyes and Tigers don’t exactly have a long history of matchups, but it’s an old rival for N-Y head coach Rusty Richards.

“As I’m watching the film (Sunday), a lot of memories are coming back to me,” Richards said. “They have some new wrinkles in there, but it’s still Shadyside. They’re aggressive on defense and they like to run the ball.”

It’s the fourth time in five seasons that Richards will square off against Shadyside in the postseason.

As an assistant coach at Trimble, Richards was part of Tomcat teams that defeated Shadyside three seasons in a row, two of the victories coming in regional championship games.

Richards is now in his second year at Nelsonville-York, and Shadyside has made the jump to Division VI, allowing Richards to match wits with Shadyside head coach Mark Holenka once again.

“It does give you a little bit of familiarity,” Richards said. “Same coaching staff there. Coach Holenka does a great job and they have a good football tradition there. They’ve got tough kids. Good football program.”

The Buckeyes aim to continue what has been one of the best seasons in program history. They went 10-0 for the sixth time, but first since 1997.

Nelsonville-York also started 11-0 in 1981, 1982, 1994 and 1997.

The Buckeyes capped off the perfect season with a dramatic 52-26 win at Athens in week 10.

“You’ve got to celebrate the victory,” Richards said. “It’s been a good weekend. The kids all enjoyed it, but it’s like a whole new season now. We want to enjoy it but it’s back to work.”

Shadyside went 7-3 in the regular season and are in the playoffs for the 17th season in a row. The Tigers have made the postseason 19 times, going 29-18 overall.

The Tigers’ three losses are by a combined 15 points to teams with a combined 22-7 record. Their best wins came over Monroe Central and River, both 6-4 teams.

“We know they’re going to come in and play football,” Richards said. “They’re tough and they’re going to hit us.”

The Tigers featured a balanced offense in 2017. Senior Alex Krupa (6-foot-3, 215 pounds) and junior Connor Banco (6-2, 210) lead the offense. Krupa gained 983 yards on 181 carries, scoring 13 touchdowns. Banco added 982 yards on 119 carries and 21 touchdowns.

The two also combined to catch 35 passes out of the backfield.

“Those two backs, they’re both bigger kids,” Richards said. “They’re over 200 pounds. They run hard.”

Junior Anthony Coggins (5-11, 140) is the Tigers’ quarterback. He completed 98 of 179 passes for 1,341 yards, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Shadyside has six players with at least 12 catches on the season. Sophomore Samuel Merryman (19 receptions, 312 yards, four touchdowns), sophomore Kelly Hendershot (19 receptions, 267 yards, one touchdown) and Banco (19 receptions, 251 yards, four touchdowns) lead the way.

“They’re going to do what they feel they need to do to win and we have to be ready,” Richards said. “We can’t fall asleep. We have to be ready for the play-action pass.”

Shadyside’s defense is led by senior linebacker Dylan Hanson (5-10, 195). He accounted for 39 solo tackles and 43 assisted tackles. Banco, another linebacker, had 34 solo tackles and 33 assists, adding six sacks. Senior Colton Stutzman, a 6-2, 152 pound senior, led the team with four interceptions.

“It’s not just one guy that stands out on the films we’ve seen which tells me they’re a good defense,” Richards said. “They’re going to fly to the ball and they’re going to hit us. We have to secure the ball against them.”

The Tigers are giving up 21.1 points per game, while scoring 36.9 on offense.

The Buckeyes will have their own weapons to counter Shadyside’s with. Senior quarterback Garrett Maiden completed 85 of 154 passes for 1,472 yards and 15 touchdowns. Sophomore Keegan Wilburn has 1,014 yards rushing, 464 yards receiving and 18 total touchdowns. Senior Colt Yinger has 822 yards rushing and 11 total touchdowns.

Senior linebacker Ronnie Wend continues to lead the team in tackles with 51 solo tackles and 114 assists. Junior defensive tackle Donovan McCollister has 40 tackles for loss.

The Buckeyes have won 17 regular season games in a row, and have won 18 of their last 19 games overall including last season’s 69-22 playoff win over Zane Trace.

Nelsonville-York has completed its 10-0 season, won the Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division for the second year in a row and finished the year ranked No. 3 in the Associated Press Division VI poll. The Buckeyes now begin what they hope is a long playoff run as the top seed in their region.

“Survive and advance, plus we want to send our seniors out with a win on this last time they’ll walk on the field at Boston field,” Richards said. “We want to make it a good memory and go play the next round.”
