Within Franklin County, there are still the parish zones. The controversy was DeSales and Hartley bickering about who had the rightful claim to St. Matthew(‘s) of Gahanna. Diocese said it’s up to the parents.

The Diocese system of attendance zones beyond Columbus is county assignment. Where this kept getting eschewed was Fairfield County. Until February 2021, Fisher was the only high Diocesan coeducational school students in Fairfield County was assigned to attend per the published public policy by the DoC. However, students west of Lancaster that were attending parish in Canal/Lithopolis and Pickerington (both of which are in Fairfield Co) were all going to Hartley. We never knew the real number of kids in that area going to BH instead of FC because the Diocese — although they knew it was happening — never made BH and the parishes disclose it to FC. Didn’t have an opportunity to find out the actual market of families looking for Catholic high school, rendering us obsolete there. So for us it wasn’t a “fair play” deal that the Diocese kept championing to be the case.

It’s since been changed, in writing, after the Diocese kept hearing direct/indirect passive-aggressive complaints from folks like me that the “Seton Parish/Hartley ‘rule’” was published.

That’s the Diocese of Columbus I remember. Politics everywhere and renderings that enriched some at others expense. Enrollment continues to drop at parochial schools and besides expensive tuition, it’s the politics that turn many off.

I’m one of the few here that played against old St. Mary’s h.s. In Lancaster. Logan played them every year in MBB. But FB, no.

Great post on the inner-workings of the Diocese of Columbus. Interesting stuff. Living in Dublin now I'm slowly learning.

Have some friends who send their kids to St. C's. Based on their experience it seems like Latin and other Fresh/Soph front loading are to weed out the kids who don't want to put in the work.

Hard for me to imagine paying the property in Dublin or Powell and also paying tuition. I understand the merits of a parochial education - I'd just have a hard time justifying living in one of the higher prices school districts.


Dublin kids go to Watterson. But we have a couple of St. C kids in the neighborhood too. That's a heck of a morning commute.

Poling took a nasty helmet-to-knee shot late in the first half on Friday. On Friday it was thought he was probably done for the season - but now hearing it might not be a season ending injury. More MCL than ACL. Definitely out for Friday against St. C.
