Former OVC Member schools

Post by RollCoal »

Folks,

I am trying to do some research and see who the first members of the OVC. I do know some of the former ones that come to mind are;

C/K
Buffalo Wayne
Symmes Valley
Oak Hill
Wheelersburg?

Anyone else have any information?

Ironton St. Joe certainly needs to be on the list.

Wikipedia has a list of and information on active and defunct Ohio High School athletic conferences but the OVC is missing. Memory has a vague recollection that pre A-plant boom Wheelersburg, West, East, New Boston and Notre Dame may have been in an older version of the OVC or the the Lawrence County schools were in and older version of the SOC.

There is this website.

https://www.fourseasonsfootball.com/

It has or had a wealth of season and schedule data from which you could possibly review and extrapolate conference membership . The link is good, but the tabs do not populate with data, at least on my device. Here is another possible link to it.

I heard a rumor a while back that saint joe was bringing football back in 2025. Can't imagine they would have the numbers to do that.

Here is what I have found.
1954 original OVC
The Peake, Coal Grove, Wheelersburg, Oak Hill, Rock Hill and South Point.
1956 added Fairland
1957 Wheelersburg left.
1962 added Ironton St. Joe
1963 added Symmes Valley
1971 Symmes Valley left.
1976 SV returned
1979 Ironton St. Joe left
1984 SV and Oak Hill left.
1986 Added C-K
1987 Added Buffalo and Wayne
1988 Wayne left
1991 C-K left
1992 Buffalo left
2002 Added River Valley
Later River Valley left.
Then Ironton, Portsmouth and Gallia were added.

I think the St Joe mentioned above is Huntington St Joe.. The Huntington school was in process of starting a varsity football program and even had a schedule for 2024,_but cancelled the season:

Really do not know the details of why they didn't launch last year or if they are a go for 2025. Yet if they do indeed start, they would be a candidate for the OVC.

I’m not sure of the details either. Coal Grove and Rock Hill both were scheduled to play them last year.
