2025 Portsmouth Trojans

Post by BuckeyeBlood »

2025 will be a very interesting season for the Trojans. They lost around 16 seniors from the playoff team a year ago.
Gone are the following kids who started or played significant minutes.

QB/S JT Williams
RB/LB Chase Heiland
WR Lukas Bradley
WR Colin Perry
RB/DE Alex McKenzie
RB/LB Nik Copley
OL/DL Landen Boren
OL/LB Dylan Sanderlin
WR/CB Jacob Tidd
RB/DE Zion Froe
DE Kingston Littlefield
LB Alex Howard
K Malachi Loper
OL/DL Jaylon Ball

As well as a few other seniors.

Clearly there’s a lot to replace but the Trojans do bring back some nice players.

Returning are the following players who most seen regular/some playing time or even started including 3 OL.

QB/WR Marquez Locklear
QB/WR Cam Williams
CB/WR Kayleb Johnson
RB/LB Fernando Poxes
TE/LB Trevin Brooks
WR/CB Dee Parker
OL/DL Wesley Runyon
OL/DL Bubba Fletcher
OL/DL Jon Carter
OL/DL Nicholas Donley
WR/S Landon Malone
WR/CB Leelind Scurlock
WR/S Logan Adkins
WR/CB Ty Henderson

It will be interesting to see who comes out as the starting QB. Locklear was the backup last season, Cam Williams started his freshman year when his older brother JT was hurt. A freshman named Berry who was the 8th grade QB could also be in the mix. RB is another one that’s up in the air. The Trojans lost their top 3 backs from last year. Returning is Poxes who I assume will start. WR there’s plenty of depth, a lot of those guys played even though the Trojans were a running team. I look for Adkins, Malone, Scurlock and the loser of the QB battle between Locklear and Williams to all get a lot of time at WR. Brooks returning at TE is huge. OL returning both tackles and a guard is nice. Will need to find a new center though to replace Sanderlin who was a 3 year starter I think. Replacing Boren on both sides of the ball will be tough.

As for the defense the secondary returns the most with Scurlock & Johnson both starting CB’s returning, as well as Parker who seen time. Safety returns Williams & Malone, as well as Adkins who all played last year and I assume will rotate this season. At LB will be the biggest hit. I think Brooks led the team in tackles and he’s back, along with starter Poxes. But losing Sanderlin, Heiland and Copley at the position hurts. I’m not sure who will replace them. The interior of the DL will be fine as Fletcher, Runyon, Carter & Donley all return, and all played last season. The ends is what will hurt. Gone are Littlefield and McKenzie who both had outstanding seasons. Boren is also gone and he played across the whole DL. Also depth in Froe & Ball are gone. Unsure who will step up at this position.

Incoming freshman who I think could see some time are
Mekhi Berry, Liam Livingston, and Case Clark. Not sure if there’s any big kids coming up. Of course you can always have a kid move in over the summer too. I personally think this team will be very fast, lack some size and I’m unsure of the offensive identity. Will they go back to being a throwing team since they lost Heiland and their other top backs behind him, as well as their running QB in JT Williams. All of Cam Williams, Locklear and Berry can scoot though , so maybe they remain a run first team.

**Unsure if Logan Adkins will be playing this fall due to a late season injury last year that kept him out of basketball season as well. His focus may be on recovery and basketball as he heads into his senior year. **Also have heard rumblings of Jamarkus Parker coming back out for football this season. I believe he’s been in the weight room and at some conditioning this summer. Time will tell if he sticks with it, but would be a nice addition to this team if so.

Here’s the 2025 schedule
7/11: 7v7 vs. Piketon
7/17: OVC 7v7 @ Coal Grove
8/8: Scrimmage vs. Wheelersburg
8/15: Jamboree @ Waverly
Wk 1: August 21st Vs. Unioto (Thurs)
Wk 2: August 29th @ West
Wk 3: September 5th Vs. Greenup
Wk 4: September 12th @ Gallia
Wk 5: September 19th Vs. Coal Grove
Wk 6: September 26th Vs. Chesapeake
Wk 7: October 3rd @ Fairland
Wk 8: October 10th @ Rock Hill
Wk 9: October 17th Vs. South Point
Wk 10: October 24th @ Ironton

What’s everyone’s thoughts and outlook on the Trojans this coming fall? As it stands now almost July I’ll say 6-4 for the Trojans. With a 12 team playoff we will see if that’s good enough to get them in, my guess is no. Probably need at least 7-3 and you’re fringe 11-12 seed.

I’m in the same boat with Unioto, don’t know much but I do know it was be a bigger and tougher opponent than Valley was for Portsmouth to open the season with the last several years. The coliseum is very nice, plenty of good spots to park. Anyone who tells you that you have to park at the school and walk over just doesn’t know any of the good close spots lol. Unioto is 1 of the 4 losses I predicted for the Trojans. I know they were tough last year, and with you saying you think they could be rather good makes me think I could be on the correct side of that prediction. That said it will be fun to face someone new. I originally thought this was a Friday night game, but looks like Portsmouth is keeping the trend of opening up on a Thursday night going. I looked at both teams on Maxpreps and the schedule Portsmouth schools posted and it does indeed say Thursday the 21st.

Not really sure about the Trojans this year. I’m thinking anywhere from 5-5 to 7-3. I will say this team is likely to be much smaller than previous teams. Don’t think it’s a big freshman class coming in. I think they only return high 20’s in number of kids who were on the team last season. Wouldn’t be shocked if this team had less than 40 kids on it.

Buckeyeblood: great rundown on the Trojans. Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if Adkins passes on football this season either. Basketball always been his sport and don't know if he'll risk another injury prior to his senior year.

QB battle will be interesting to watch. Even if Berry doesn't win that battle, they gotta get him on the field somewhere (WR/TE?)...special athlete.*

BuckeyeBlood: Outstanding post on the 2025 Trojans. Probably the most interesting battle for a starting spot will be at QB. From what everybody I've talked to has told me that Marquez Locklear should be the starting QB. Very good arm and mobility.

We've made the playoffs every year that Coach Kalb has been the HC, and I see more of the same. Who starts at QB will be a critical decision though.

From what I gathered during summer basketball it looks at this time like Logan Adkins will not play football, but that may change.

Art Vandelay: You are spot on about Mekhi Berry. He is a special talent, and he's shown that as a freshman starting on the basketball team this summer.

As always, I'm hoping the participation numbers are sufficient enough just in case the unfortunate long term injuries come up. Hard to get through a season without some significant injuries.

GO TROJANS!!!

Camp gets underway for the 2025 Trojans this evening. I know vacations are still going on, it’s not mandatory and what not but I’m anxious to see how many kids show up.

I hate Portsmouth is leaving the OVC I can understand why travel will be cut down quite a bit.
I hope they have a great season though and continue playing Ironton after they join the SOC.
They may be a bit smaller this year on the O-line and D-line but they have always had speed and great skill players,
Good Luck Portsmouth and hope you have a great season till you play Ironton of course lol but in all honesty I hope you do well and stay healthy mighty Trojans

fielddaddy: Portsmouth and Ironton will continue to play each other; they've played for over 100 years and I would be shocked if they discontinued the series. As far as leaving the OVC, I will miss it because PHS had developed some good rivalries. The SOC should be a lot of fun because there will be new rivalries that will develop and the attendance at games should increase.

Hopefully our participation numbers will be good; at least get 50 players. Depth is so important in football; you can't get through a season without some significant injuries. I'm thinking 6-4 or 7-3 for the Trojans if they can get good play at QB.

Heard that 36 kids showed up yesterday.......hopefully the number will increase some, although I'm not expecting a big jump. I wonder how many of the 36 were freshmen.

Have to have depth; lack of it can be a huge factor in the W/L column.

GO TROJANS!!

With the smell of footballs in the air, I compiled a list of 26 random, notable games from the PHS past.....recent and distant. I'm sure some of these will bring up some memories, some good, some not so good. Don't know the exact years, so the games are post-2000 unless otherwise noted. Playoff games are designated Playoff.

1. PHS 35, Ironton 28.......Fighting Tigers up 28-7 at the half, then Talyn Parker goes wild in the final 2 quarters and the Trojans pull out the win.
2. PHS 19, Ironton 18 (pre-2000)......Ironton up 12-0 quick, then Portsmouth rallies to win as the PHS defense stiffens in the 2nd half.
3. PHS 14, Ironton 9 (1984)......PHS breaks IHS's 77 game unbeaten streak as the backfield of Danny Reid and KB Johnson prove too much for Tigers.
4. PHS 41, Ironton 20 (pre-2000) Trojans and Ironton play twice; 2nd time Fighting Tigers win 6-3 at PHS; cost the Trojans a playoff berth.
5. PHS 45, Wheelersburg 0......one of the most lopsided PHS wins in the series history. Thinking it was the 2000 undefeated AP Poll champ Trojans.
6. PHS 46, Wheelersburg 14 (1970's)....Trojans win at the Burg with Norm Burrows at QB.
7. PHS 21, Wheelersburg 17....Burg fumbles the snap trying to run out the clock and PHS scores winning TD in the final seconds.
8. PHS 50, Fairland 38...........Playoff; Trojans get payback on Dragons after FHS won in the regular season.
9. PHS 36, Cincinnati Purcell Marian 14......Playoff; Trojans wallop the Cavaliers in 1st round of the playoffs.
10. PHS 31, Dayton Chaminade-Julienne 24.......Playoff; at Hillsboro; Trojans beat outstanding DCJ team en route to the State Semifinals.
11. Van Wert 28, PHS 21........Playoff; painful loss for the Trojans who couldn't punch in the go ahead TD inside the 10 yard line.
12. PHS 66, Chillicothe 0.......Trojans completely destroy Cavaliers in their biggest margin of victory ever vs. CHS.
13. PHS 55, Chillicothe 24......torrential rains couldn't keep the Trojans from blasting CHS at Chillicothe.
14. PHS 21, Jackson 19.........Trojans only win at Jackson in SEOAL play; Ironmen missed a 50 yard FG to win it at the gun.
15. PHS 24, Logan 21............Trojans only win at Logan in SEOAL play; Zaide Noel (Whitley) kicks a 25 yard FG to win it in the final minute.
16. PHS 34, Rock Hill 33.........Portsmouth rallies from a 33-14 deficit at Trojan Coliseum.
17. PHS 28, Belmont Union Local 26.....Playoff; Trojans win back and forth game at BUL.
18. PHS 14, Philo 13.........Playoff; Electrics drop a TD pass in the end zone and Trojans hang on at Spartan Stadium.
19. PHS 28, Zane Trace 22....Playoff; Trojans hang on vs. the Pioneers at ZT stadium.
20. Harrison 36, PHS 6.......(1988) Playoff; Trojans get routed at Lockland HS; Steve Stola was PHS coach.
21. Columbus Beechcroft 30, PHS 21 (pre-2000).....Playoffs; Trojans lose at Lancaster; Cougars offense too much for PHS D.
22. PHS 6, Lancaster 0 (1975).........Trojans beat a very good Golden Gales team at Spartan under Coach Dave Lantz.
23. Newark Licking Valley 28, PHS 27.....Playoff; controversial late penalty called on PHS; JoJo Parker with the "Run of the Century" (75 TD run).
24. PHS 36, Middletown 20 (1966)....Trojans beat the Middies at homecoming after Middletown beat PHS 98-14 in 1964 at PHS's homecoming.
25. Wheelersburg 10, PHS 7......Burg returns an INT 100 yards to win at Burg.
26. Coal Grove 66, PHS 63........Defense for both teams didn't show up in wild shootout at CG.

26. Coal Grove 66, PHS 63........Defense for both teams didn't show up in wild shootout at CG.

A few I would like to add to this list are

Portsmouth’s 37-16 win last year in the playoffs over Amanda CC, first ever home playoff game and victory for the Trojans at the coliseum.

The Portsmouth screw job of 2024, controversial call at the end of the game see’s the Trojans fall to Fairland 22-21.

2023 OT win at Rock Hill when the defense stood tall and held RH out of the endzone on the 2 point winning try.

2014 Week 1 loss to Valley 41-40 in a wild game.

2009 first ever win at the coliseum over Portsmouth West 21-20.

Thanks for the additional games, PTrojan59. You're absolutely right about the Fairland game. That one really stung because there's no way that the Dragons should have been allowed to run another play.

26. Coal Grove 66, PHS 63........Defense for both teams didn't show up in wild shootout at CG.
Wow awesome recap ! A little surprised no west games mentioned ! I can think of 4-5 off the top of my head quick ! 02 at The Tank for the regional championship, 04-06 Clifford goes for 2 and the win and gets stopped, and 09 21-20 at the coliseum for the first time. That place was packed out and y’all head on despite our big comeback

SiderBlood: My apology for not mentioning your Senators. I just tried to name games off the top of my head. Probably the two games that standout the most are the ones you mentioned.......the playoffs at Ironton in which West won 27-18 (I think that was the score), after the Trojans beat PW in the regular season. As PTrojan59 and you both said, the first game in the new Trojan Coliseum was a classic. Just a few years ago, PHS was up 14-0 on West at the Rock and the Senators came back and scored I think 28 straight points to win. Another game with an odd twist was a 41-7 PHS win over West at Northwest. I believe PW's new turf was not ready for play, that's why they moved the game to Northwest.

Just heard the other day that the participation numbers have been holding steady at around 36. With August starting next week, hopefully they'll be a few more deciding to play. If the number stays under 40, that's as low a count as I can remember.
