Athens' senior, back-up center, Travis Keirns was given the starting job tonight against Wellston due to his mother's actively declining health. With just a few minutes left in the game Travis was notified that his mother, Fran, had lost her battle with cancer. There was hugs all around for Travis from his teammates and there wasn't a dry eye in the entire cheerleading squad. Fran has been a long time supporter and photographer of Athens athletics. My thoughts and prayers go out to Travis and the entire Keirns family.

... condolences to Travis , his family and the Athens school community ... very difficult to lose a parent no matter the time in a persons life - to lose a parent when one is but beginning your own life ... the most difficult of all ... our hearts and prayers to Travis, all involved for strength and understanding ... Travis - the strength you showed in playing last night, knowing the condition of your mother ... your mother would be so very proud of you for the character that you exhibited , your mother did a great job in preparing you for life in such a short time ......

i was just notified that Travis actually did not start that night against Wellston, although some of his teammates wanted him to. i did not see for myself who started so it must have just been a rumor going around the stadium. i think i can speak for the entire athens community when i say, thank you all for voicing your concerns and offering your thoughts and prayers. thanks again everybody.
