Good job on representing well. Early on in the season but one thing that always seems true is that you guys progress so much faster and more than almost any other program. Don’t know much about your “so called weaknesses” that I see some posting about but im very optimistic about you guys winning out the rest of your games.I wouldn’t be surprised if you guys won the region this year. Great win!

Burg needs to work on that pass defense. If they don't improve, Winters from Jackson will eat them alive. Played a couple of Freshmen tonight on defense. First time I think that has ever happened at Burg!!!

Will pay huge dividends moving forward with this season and onwards, but the defense is no joke to hold ironton to 12 points. Jackson couldn’t do it. Beating mcnick and putting up that many points is just as impressive. Regular season is just a warm up now and you guys have the sky free for takeoff.

Defense bent but didn’t break tonight. McNic threw the ball all over the place. Going to need to work on that
McNich QB throwing bullets. Also threw a very nice fade pass. Scary thing is that he is only a sophomore and is not the starting QB; starter got hurt last game. Their receivers were really good with lots of speed.

Nonetheless, Burg was the better team; way more physical. Again, penalties were a killer. I bet Burg was penalized over 15x. Some were shaky, but the roughing the passer and the two PIs were legit. All lead to touchdowns.

I didn’t see it from my end, but the guy next to me thought it was legit. That said, those we’re definitely hometown refs. LOL!

Didn’t get to make the trip up watched the live stream. Very impressed with the announcers. Probably the best I’ve heard. Thanks for broadcasting it for us that couldn’t make the trip. Go Burg

Burg has good coaches, strong community support, good athletes…

But I think it’s the number of boys they have playing on the team that makes the difference; this year.

Having so many kids allows for more physical and competitive practices. During games, fewer kids go both ways, and coaches have more bodies to rotate in and out.

Burg has over 70 kids on the team. Now compare that to the rest of the SOC: Waverly is next largest with around 60; rest of SOC 2 in the 30’s.

Burg’s numbers are a huge advantage. If the other SOC schools had Burg numbers, the league would be far more competitive.

Great win last night Pirates!! Definitely made the trip home afterwards a little easier. Rockets were a well coached team and that QB had a heck of an arm on him. Ate at The Turf Club before game. Thank you to whoever mentioned that earlier in this thread. Great burgers! Now onto the Red Devils of Russell. Go Burg!!

Anyone know the total penalties for each team? Just curious since these guys were very flag happy.

My son and I saw some Burg folks there when we were leaving. One of our favorite places to go; definitely great burgers.

Quick story: it used to be named Terry’s Turf Club, and the owner Terry was a character. One of the first times I ate there, I was sitting with my wife at the bar. I asked for a knife to cut the burger in half (they are gigantic). Terry was at the bar and said to me “what kind of p…y are you? That’s not how you eat our burgers”. Laughed my a$$ off! Still use the technique he told me to this day.

Btw, Terry was caught on camera saying crude, sexual stuff to one of his waitresses. Video went public, and Terry ended up selling. Hence why his name is no longer connected to the restaurant.

The QB got bumped by two or three kids from burg immediately after he threw it. He barely moved and wasn’t taken down. All three players held up as soon as he threw it. It was an anticipated flag. I couldn’t tell about any other flags but that one I thought was one of those, anticipating ones because it looked like it was going to be. But that crew was flag happy and quick on the draw all night. I thought it was funny when coach Woodward was out there trying to show the ref how a center is allowed to change the ball in his hands prior to snapping. I still didn’t understand that call.

There were a number of bad calls on Burgs second TD. The refs may some bad mistakes all night:

1) The worst was when the side judge blew the whistle and threw a flag in the middle of the play; RB had the ball and was already past the line but not down. Burg back gained five yards, but the play was ruled dead because of the whistle. As for the flag, it was picked up.

2) Twice on the spots. Should have been measurements but were none. Once, the chains didn’t even move on change of possession.

Anyway, glad Burg won, but some of these refs need to up their game.

Quite a few kids on the field last night that didn’t play last week, especially Freshman. I don’t remember Burg ever playing a Freshman in my almost 50 years of watching Burg!!

I think they held there own last night and contributed quite well. The only name I can remember is Kenyon Evans. He ran the ball a few times and looked good.

I’ve heard some people talk about that class so they should be fun to watch the next few years.

Holden played as a freshman. Started at the end of the season due to injuries. I think one or two since have played as well.

But to your point, it is very rare.

You are correct I remember Holden had that stretched out TD against Zane Trace in the playoffs. He was a different animal. IMO he is the best athlete to ever play at the Burg!! There may never be another like him.

Holden was definitely special, but Burg has had some good ones over the years.

I don’t remember those in the 70’s but do some of those in the 80’s and 90’s:

1) Brad Walke: was a star in basketball, baseball, and track; best Burg basketball player I have ever seen. He also started at QB his freshman year at Oak Hill but never played football for Burg. Went to UNC Charlotte.

2) Matt Miller class of ‘90: state football title as QB, state semis in basketball his junior year. Had Holden’s size. Would have been a helluva pitcher if he played baseball. Went to OU on a football scholarship although I think he could have went bigger in basketball.

3) Chris Ellis: three sport star. Starting LB as a sophomore on Burg’s state champ team; started as a sophomore on the basketball and baseball teams as well. Helluva baseball player. Went to OSU.

4) Jonathan Eaton: star in football, basketball, and track. In college, he actually made it into a Sports Illustrated story called Zips Mr Everything. Was leading Akron in tackles as the starting safety and was one of the top punters in the MAC.

Always hard to determine who was the best, but I think we’ll eventually see another “Holden”. Just might take a while.

You are correct sir!! I went to school with Walke and I know Coach Miller tried to get him to play. He just never would bite. I think he loved baseball more than basketball. Hard to believe that but in talking to him after we graduated, the pressure put on him by his dad made basketball just not that fun for him.

The other three were incredible athletes that’s for sure. Maybe I should have said the best football player I’ve ever watched at Burg. He could take over a football game anytime he wanted to. His talent was usually head and shoulders above anyone else on the field. Holden is just my opinion.

Not sure if you are aware, but Brad passed some time ago. Was living in Oxford, Ohio at the time.

He was my hero growing up, and when I was older, loved playing basketball with him. Not just an awesome player but a great guy.
