Nelsonville vs. Athens is a rivalry that dates back to the beginning of high school sports. The old Nelsonville Greyhounds used to battle the pre-consolidated, original Athens Bulldogs year after year for over four decades. Likewise, the Greyhounds had two non-league rivalries: The Plains Indians and the Chauncey-Dover Blue Devils. In 1967, both consolidations occured giving us the current Nelsonville-York Buckeyes and the green and gold Athens Bulldogs.

Here are the all-time series stats since 1967:

NY leads all-time series 20 wins, 11 losses

1967 Athens (H) 32-22
1968 Athens (A) 38-6
1969 Athens (H) 44-8
1983 Nelsonville-York (H) 12-8
1984 Nelsonville-York (A) 20-7
1985 Athens (H) 22-6
1986 Athens (A) 12-6 (3 OT)
1987 Athens (H) 7-0
1988 Athens (A) 34-20
1989 Athens (H) 30-12
1990 Athens (A) 25-6
1991 Nelsonville-York (H) 27-8
1992 Nelsonville-York (A) 35-0
1993 Nelsonville-York (H) 38-0
1994 Nelsonville-York (A) 28-0
1995 Nelsonville-York (H) 22-15
1996 Nelsonville-York (A) 31-9
1997 Nelsonville-York (H) 48-7
1998 Nelsonville-York (A) 21-20
1999 Nelsonville-York (H) 35-17
2000 Nelsonville-York (A) 17-14
2001 Nelsonville-York (H) 22-7
2002 Athens (A) 35-20
2003 Athens (H) 35-6
2004 Nelsonville-York (A) 20-0
2005 Nelsonville-York (H) 39-21
2006 Nelsonville-York (A) 56-16
2007 Nelsonville-York (H) 22-8
2008 Nelsonville-York (H) 22-14
2009 Nelsonville-York (A) 14-13
2010 Nelsonville-York (H) 28-27

The Buckeyes have dominated the series in the past two decades, as NY is 18-2 in the last twenty years vs. Athens.

In a rivalry with historical ties to the beginning of high school sports, no game has ever been bigger between the two schools. An undefeated season, a league championship, and the Doc Kroner Trophy are all on the line in the final game of the regular season.

GO BUCKEYES!!! WIN IT for 1981, 1982, 1992, 1994, and 1997 and become the sixth NY team in history to finish the regular season a perfect 10-0!

Ah, but we are holding back the old SEOAL records from 1925 thru 1966. What would they be if I may ask ? Never mind, I think most of us old timers know the answer. When you say all-time, records for teams even before consolidations should be counted to be totaled correctly in history if you ask me. Just sayin.

If you got em, post em. Do you have any idea how many hours I spent in the basement of Alden Library just to collect all of NY's history back to consolidation? I'm not trying to hold back anything. And I disagree, as Nelsonville and pre-consolidated Athens were different schools prior to 1967, I would see it as a subset. Even LoganLocos who has all of Logan's history has separated Logan-Nelsonville from Logan-NY in subsets and then lists a combined record. That's exactly how I would list NY/Athens if I had the scores prior to '67.

If I still lived in SEO I would make the drive...I don't think It will be a blowout. You don't get to 9-0 by not being any good. I honestly think Lucasville Valley and N-Y are on a collision course.

Buckeyes 35
Bulldogs 24

Good luck to both teams stay injury free!!

WHAT A WEEK OF HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL WE HAVE IN STORE THIS WEEK!

Played in those games!
2000 NY--------17-14
2001 NY--------22-7
2002 Athens----35-20
2003 Athens----35-6
My record vs. Nelsonville-York (as a Bulldog) was [2-2]...
Not many people can say they won once, I can say I have won twice!

Four great games between these two schools...
I have tasted the agony of defeat when you are so close "See 2000" and have kicked myself over blown chances "See 2001" and then have felt the relief of a community for past defeats "See 2002" and then finally defended the Kroner Trophy at the hostile Boston Field my Senior Year...

Since 2003 (Athens last Win)
2004 Nelsonville-York---------20-0
2005 Nelsonville-York---------39-21
2006 Nelsonville-York---------56-16
2007 Nelsonville-York---------22-8
2008 Nelsonville-York---------22-14
2009 Nelsonville-York---------14-13
2010 Nelsonville-York---------28-27

There has only been (1) Blow-Out victory in 2006...
This game has become a great battle over the past decade even though the victor has been NY in every game but (2)...

These Athens Seniors have been training over the past (4) years of to beat Nelsonville-York. In the last 3 games the score has been within 8, with the last 2 games being within a single point. I do not see a blow-out for either side...The Athens Seniors have already accomplished one of their goals for the season and that was making the play-offs which Athens has not done since 1990, and that is a huge relief...The next goal is beating NY...They can put all their effort into this game without the fear of losing the Play-Offs (which from experiences is the worst feeling to ever feel at the end of Week 10.)

I agree with that this will be a game between two of the best Defense's in SEO and definitely the best two defense's in the TVC...The Plains will be packed, and the environment in the stadium will most likely be that of a small D-3 College Game...

This is the biggest Athens/NY game.

Both teams are playing for more than just winning 1 game...
They are playing for a LEAGUE Title...
They are playing for a HOME Play-Off Game...
They are playing for the DOC KRONER TROPHY...
They are playing for their ALUMNUS...
They are playing for PERFECTION (10-0)...

Which ever team commits the least turnovers WINS this game!
One mistake can make or break each teams chances of winning!

Let's Go ATHENS!
"Just WIN Baby!"

What a great game for Athens County and these two high schools! The kids who take part in this one will remember the week's build-up, pep-rallies and mostly The Game for the rest of their lives. My hope for all of them is for them to take it all in and enjoy it.

Will probably make the drive up from Scioto County on Friday Night to watch this one. Good Luck to Both Teams!

You know svb1112 is right. The unfortunate thing is also this.......my senior year we only lost 1 game and it was a close loss - guess which game I have the most vivid memories of, the only one we lost. For whatever reason, it seems people often remember the few losing games as much or more than the many wins.

3 observations from the 'cheap seats'.

1) The offensive output by both teams versus TVC-Ohio opponents: Nelsonville-York 1,477 yards ... Athens 1,474 yards ... That's crazy how equal that is.
2) The defensive versus TVC-Ohio opponents: Nelsonville-York has given up 674 yards ... Athens 604 yards.
3) Dustin Young has rushed for 1,574 yards on the season; Nathan Dean has passed for 1,571 yards ... When is the last time a NY team has been so balanced - that is impressive.

hard to believe this is a game for a league title, with the size of these schools being so much difference. but i look for the buckeyes to win this one.

If Ironton were playing Logan for the SEOAL title a couple of years ago would it have surprised you? It's a 2 division difference also.

A couple random facts......

NY defeated Logan this season for the 7th time in Buckeye history. In 5 of the 6 other seasons NY defeated Logan, the Buckeyes went on to a 10-0 record.

The Buckeyes have had five 10-0 seasons: '81, '82, '92, '94 and '97.

The Buckeyes have had one 9-1 season: '06

The Buckeyes have had one 8-1 season: '73 [only played 9 games that year due to the Vinton County Teachers Strike]

The Buckeyes have never lost the final regular season game in their one loss seasons, meaning every 9-0 Buckeye team in school history went on to a 10-0 regular season record.

The '11 Buckeyes will, worse case scenario, join the '73 and '06 Buckeyes in the one loss column. A win over Athens will put them in the ranks of the other five undefeated teams.

Of course, the ultimate comparison of the '11 Buckeyes to past teams may very well be how far they advance in the playoffs.

Wow ... 33 votes for NY to win ... Only 13 say Athens ... Interesting.

I liked the article in todays Messenger about the NY/Alex game:

Jacob Coon quote: "Its been the greatest year. I was a Bulldog growing up. Guess what? They're going to have something coming to them. We'll be ready for it."

Anyone think Coach Boston will make Coon run any laps this week for providing buletin board material for Athens? Well, that is of course after he gets his breath back from running a fumble recovery 30 yards for a touchdown Friday ...

The lady who called into 107.7 last night called it 'poetry in motion' ... lol ... I seen it on T.V. today - Uh, it looked more like 'a whale out of water.'

(And yea, the post is to add a little humor to the topic - absolutly no pun intented.)
