Newark Catholic 28 Hopewell-Loudon 14 GAME REPORT

Post by LICKING COUNTY FAN »

On a beautiful day in Canton, Ohio the Newark Catholic Green Wave set out to complete a journey that began shortly after most of these young warriors suffered a major whipping by Lancaster Fisher Catholic in the opening round of the 2006 playoffs.

In there way was the states top ranked division six team, Hopewell Loudon. The Chieftains entered this contest averaging over forty points a game with a game high seventy-five against North Baltimore.

With the sun shining on the Newark Catholic fans side of the field almost like a sign from GOD the game got started. Things started out with a false start on the Green Wave and then two good plays by the Chieftains defense put the Green Wave offense in a third and long situation. Quarterback Mark (BUZZSAW) Elwell dropped back to throw and found Tony(ALLSTATE) WEISENT wide open and the throw was right on the money. The play picked up twenty-four yards. Mark (BIG PLAY) Nichols would follow his offensive line and pick up thirteen-yards on the next play. Right after that Aaron (Ground and Pound) Shook picked up five yards as he made Jake Frisch and Tony Reinhart the two tacklers for Hopewell-Loudon know just how much he loves hard contact. Nichols would get four more carries and pick up a total of sixteen yards. With the potent ground and pound attack working in large part because of the work done by the offensive line the Green Wave handed the ball to Shook who pushed his way for a gain of four yards taking the ball to the Chieftains seven-yard line. From there it took four more plays for the Green Wave to get into the end zone. The score came on a one-yard run by Elwell who kept his legs moving and let the hogs in front flex their muscles pushing the defensive line back just enough. Christian (Mr. Confident) Spencer out of the hold of Miles Richardson increased the lead to, 7-0. The drive total sixty-four yards and took 7:00 off of the clock.

Adam Bricker would get the ball to start things off for the states top ranked division six team and waiting for him was David (POERHOUSE) Puterbaugh and Matt(SILENT BUT DEADLY) Lott the play went for one-yard. Two plays after that the Chieftains had to punt the ball away. Heath Bricker’s punt went forty-one-yards and was downed on the Newark Catholic thirty-nine-yard line.

Nichols could only get three-yards on the drives first play but a face masking penalty tacked on fifteen more yards giving the Green Wave another first down. Elwell then took off on a eleven-yard run again moving the chains and sending the big Newark Catholic crowd into a loud roar.
Two plays later Elwell found Marcus(future star) Baker for a six-yard gain. Baker was tackled by the hard hitting Robbie Oldaker . After Oldaker thrwe Shook down for a one-yard loss Nichols took the ball from Elwell and gained seven-yards. The quarter ended with Oldaker taking Shook down after a one-yard gain. The drive came to a close when Elwell took off on a fifteen-yard run giving the Green Wave a,13-0 lead. Elwell got the NEWARK CATHOLIC FAN block of the game by Tony Weisent. Spencer connected on the point after increasing the lead to 14-0 with 11:16 left in the half.

The Newark Catholic defense forced another three and out getting the ball right back to the offense who seemed to be hitting on all cylinders the first two times they had the ball. The punt would go only twenty-six-yards but the punt team of the Chieftains led by Hudson Smith and Nick Steve held Baker to only a two-yard return. So the drive would start from Hopewell-Loudon, forty-seven-yard line.

After a short gain by Nichols and another face making penalty on the Chieftains ,Newark Catholic on a beautiful fake by Elwell, who hid the behind his back while Nichols carried out the fake dropped back to throw the ball. After not seeing anything open Elwell scrambled for a few-yards picking up the first down. Three straight runs by Nichols aided by more good work by the hogs up front pick up a total of seventeen-yards taking the ball down to the Chieftians twenty-yard-line. From there Elwell would take it in on another nice run. The point after by Spencer gave the Green Wave a big, 21-0 lead. On the scoring run Casey Cunningham made a huge block and Weisnet took out two guys by himself.

Tyler Brown would find Lukas Schalk wide open as he got behind Elwell and Baker for a thirty-two-yard gain. If Schalk would not have bobbled the ball before catching it he might have been able to score. Elwell though recovered nicely and laid a big hit on him. The Brown, Schalk combo combines again on a nine-yard pass and catch one the next play. Jarred Huey and Matt Lewis combined on the hit. The Newark Catholic defense would give up only one more yard on this drive before getting the ball back to the offnese. On one of those plays Matt Grieb stop Schalk for a two-yard loss after the talented player had made another catch. On another play Grieb was able to break up a pass and Baker laid a big time hit on the would be receiver.

Shook was able to pick up eight-yards on a power run that ended when he was taken down by
Robbie Oldaker and Jake Frisch with 4:54 left in the half. The hogs up front made a big push ob the line of Loudon. On the next play Elwell rolled to his left and found Shook who after making the catch picked up another ten-yards or so. Elwell on the next play hooked up with Grieb for a nine-yard gain. Travis Wise laid a hard hit on Grieb but the damage was already done on the play. Three runs by Nichols picked up twelve more yards, moving the ball down to the Loudon twenty-eight. Nichols would go for twenty-two yards then two- plays later he would plow in from a yard out. The kick by Spencer increased the lead to 28. The drive went for seventy-six-yards, took eleven plays and ate up 4:36.

Aaron Kapelka would picked up nineteen-yards before Grieb was able to stop him on third and ten. THE run went right up the gut of Green Wave defense. Brown would hook up with Schalk for five-yards making the stop for the Green Wave once again was Grieb with :25 left in the half. On third and five Brown teamed up with Siebenaller for a ten-yard gain. Making the stop for the Green Wave on the play was Elweel, with :17 showing on th clock. Brown and Siebenaller would hook up again with :13 left this time the gain would be for eleven-yards. Elweel again made the stop. The Green Wave defense was able to keep the Chieftains out of the end zone as the near perfect first half came to a close.

Brown wouls show off his outstanding arm with a long pass to Andrew Brickenr, who easily got behind Matt Lewis with 11:11 showing on the clock. Lewis was able to make a shoe string saving tackle. David (POWERHOUSE)PUTERBAUGH forced Kapelka to fumble to ball and pouncing on it was THE NEWARK CATHOLIC FAN PLAYER OF THE GAME MARK(BUZZSAW) ELWELL with 10:55 left in the quarter.

The Loudon defense would force a punt after giving up only three-yards.
The Chieftains offense would start their next drive out with a incomplete pass that Matt Grieb just missed picking off then Weisent was able to sack Brown for a four-yard loss. On third and long once again Brown was able to find the talented and dangerous LUKAS SCHALK for a twenty-five yard pick up. Grieb leaped up to try and tip the ball but he just missed once again. Then on the next play with tight coverage by Elwell, Brown somehow got the ball to Siebenaller for a pick up of ten. On the next play Brown threw a little screen pass to Hudson Smith that picked up twelve-yards Baker just missed a big hit on the play. Hopewell-Loudon would work the ball to the Green Wave one yard line then from there Travis Wise plowed in from a yard out. The point after by Jay Yost made the score,28-7.

On the next Newark Catholic drive Nichols would fumble the ball after gaining four-yards luckily Weisent was able to save things as he pounced on the ball. Two players later Nichols again put the ball on the ground this time the Chieftains ANDREW BRICKNER
came up with it. Nichols seemed to be shaken up on the play which only made thing worse for the Green Wave.

On the first play after the recovered fumble Brown found Schalk who got inside Elwell making the catch easy and the gain twenty-six. Brown would hook up with Siebenaller for a fourteen-yard pick up a short time later. On the play Adam Annarino had Siebenaller covered like a blanket making the catch almost unreal. The Newark Catholic defense flexed its muscled and held on downs a short time later getting the ball back to the offense that seemed somewhere else thus far in the second half.

The drive for Newark Catholic started out like a wild fire out of control when Elwell took of for a twenty-one-yard pick up but soon after fizzled out setting up a punt by Spencer. The Chieftains specail teams came up big when Andrew Bricner blocked the kick and even bigger when Matt Brickner came up with it at the Green Wave fourteen.

Loudon needed only four plays to light up the scoreboard again. Scoring for the Chieftains was Travis Wise on a one-yard keeper. The point after cut the lead to,28-14.

The Chieftains defense forced a three and out forcing another Newark Catholic punt by Spencer. This time Spencer was able to get the ball off and did so in the tune of a fifty-two-yard kick. MARCUS Baker just missed making a nice catch on a well thrown ball a play before the punt after just missing the catch Baker was or appeared to be injured. He limped off of the field under his own power.

Facing a third and eight early in the last quarter Brown as he had done so any times before was able to move the chains when he found Schalk for thirty-six yards. Schalk was able to get way behind Huey and Matt Lewis making the thow and catch look real easy. On the next play Brown connected with Hudson Smith for fifteen yards. The Newark Catholic defense showed why they are as good as they are as they shut down the Chieftains new founded high octane offense getting the ball back to their sleep walking second half offense.

That sleep walking offense came to life just long enough to run off 3:57 seconds off of the clock. The big play of the time killing was a big twenty-one-yard run to the fifty by Elwell. Nichols picked up ten more yards to add to his total. But the excitement was far from over because Elwell put the ball on the ground when he was hit by Travis Wise and of course a Loudon player came up with it. The player coming up with it was Aaron Kapelka.

Facing a third and eleven the Chieftains needed Brown to come up huge again but it was not meant to be because Matt Lewis made a great interception in the end zone for the Green Wave to secure the VICTORY with 3:15 seconds left in the game.

Nichols would carry the ball three straight times picking up thirty more yards adding to his total. Shook got a carry gaining seven-yards and then it was time for the sweetest formation of all and that as we all know is the VICTORY formation. Twice it was called and then the clock said 000 and Newark Catholic was the 2007 DIVISION SIX STATE CHAMPIONS and this old man was the happiest he had been since 1991, the last time this GREAT SCHOOL HAD WON A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

TO ALL OF THE PLAYERS AND COACHES WE THE FAN SAY THANK YOU /color]
