Early look at Chillicothe Unioto Shermans

Post by Army »

What will their team bring to the SVC this season?

They have Two Assistant Coaches from Chillicothe H.S.'s Team last season.

I wish the Shermans the best...Good Luck :!:

Better update your sources because the two former Assistants were not hired.
small senior class, Juniors will have to grow up quick.

bengalfan76,

So they did not hire Coach V and his partner? WOW. We were all told they left our Cavaliers to join the Sherman Staff. Hmmmm...interesting. :-D

Thanks for the up-date.

Good Luck to the Shermans :!:

Yes this is correct. Val has no coaching job and coach Justice is at Paint Valley. He was at Westfall 7 on 7 last Sat. Both Val and Justice had been working with the Shermans and word has it they even took and implemented the Cavaliers offense and defense. You know how the administration is at Unioto

Yeah we all know how the administration is at Unioto.

I am sorry to hear about that. Well, I hope the best for the Shermans, but looks like another possible year of the same old same old.

WHy did Unioto not hire them? Did they accept jobs and the administration change their mind? When they left they said they were coaching at Unioto, back in May

Would love to know the answer to your question. Curt Detillion is one of Val's old players when Val had the head coaching job for the Shermans several years ago. Coach Detillion must not have any pull with the administration.

Pretty sure Curt played for D. Garrett. I don't think Val was the HC when Bundy(Curtis) played.

Anyone out there know the correct answer to this? I'm pretty sure that I'm right but I'm human and do make mistakes.

Chillicothe Gazette, November 10, 1981

Grooms earns Coach of the Year as SVC Squad named

Champion Unioto claimed seven spots on the All-Scioto Valley Conference Team named Monday by SVC coaches. Coach of the Year honors went to Adena’s Jake Grooms, who in his third year led the Warrior’s to a 6-3-1 overall record and a second place conference finish.

Other special awards went to Unioto junior Jeff Bales, who won Back of the Year honors. Teammate Mark Anders and Zane Trace’s Terry Love, both tackles, shared the Lineman of the Year honors.

Grooms took over the Adena coaching reins after the Warriors suffered through consecutive 2-8 seasons in 1977 and 1978. After finishing with a 4-6 record his first two years, the Warriors won six consecutive SVC games this year before falling to Unioto 20-0, in the championship contest Friday.

“Anytime you’re selected by your peers it’s an honor”, Grooms said. “I’m pleased and the kids are pleased and proud. It’s a reflection on the team. It shows that the other coaches in the conference respected us as a team.”

This was the first year the award didn’t go automatically to the coach of the conference champion. Westfall’s Clarence Perry and Unioto’s Dwight Garrett shared the conference title and the award last year.

Garrett, who led the Sherman’s to a 9-1 record and a No. 10 ranking in the final Associated Press poll, was pleased to see a strong Unioto flavor to the all-conference team. Adena was second with five players selected.

Of his special honorees, Garrett described Bales, a 5’9, 175-pound junior, as the “spark” of Unioto’s explosive offense. Bales gained 953 yards in 111 carries for an 8.6 per carry average. He also led the area in scoring with 19 touchdowns and 120 points.

Anders, a junior 5’10, 208 two-way tackle, had 24 solo tackles and 74 assists on the year. “Mark was behind Curtis Detillion as our leading tackle, but he did just about anything a boy possibly can do. He blocked punts and field goals, intercepted a pass, caused fumbles…..”, Garrett said.

The conference’s other Lineman of the Tear, senior Terry Love (5’9, 210), was also a two way performer. “We set consecutive team rushing records the last two years and we ran mostly behind him at offensive tackle,” said Zane Trace coach Jim Gill. “He wasn’t a real emotional type of leader, he just goes out and gets the job done on Friday night.”

Love, a second-year member of the all-SVC team, had 44 first hits and 34 assists on defense this season.

Adena’s Ted Wheeler and Zane Trace’s Chad Vollmar shared all-conference punting honors, while Unioto’s Kevin Trimble earned this years honors for place kicker.

The All-SVC team was not selected position by position, rather, coaches selected their best athletes. Therefore, some positions have several players, while others, such as quarterback, have no players named.

Players selected to the first team were:

Unioto – Jeff Bales; Mark Anders; Kevin DePoy, 5’10 163 Jr. outside linebacker; Curtis Detillion, 6’3 222 Sr. offensive tackle; Mark Smith, 5’10 160 Sr. offensive end; and David Cunningham, 5’11 200 Sr. offensive guard.

Adena – Tracy Bower, Mark Ater, Matt Glandon, Homer Austin

Westfall – Scott Galloway, Gary Roberts, Jimmy Green

Zane Trace – Jay Finlay, Terry Love, Gary Clever

Paint Valley – Shannon Bobb, Ken Dempsey

Southeastern – Ray Speakman, Steve Wyckoff

Huntington – C.R. McCloskey

Piketon – Todd Mowery

Players given honorable mention:

Adena – Dan Rutherford, Greg Corey, Ed Williams, Steve Schmidt

Huntington – Charlie Watkins, Sam Lane, Ed Southworth, Troy Pierce

Paint Valley – Chris Carroll, Greg Moody, Mike Davis, Daron Myers

Piketon – Doug McRoberts, Todd Ryder

Southeastern – Jeff Higley, Mark Skaggs, Jim Cunningham, Tom Clemmons

Unioto – Marty Harris, Ron Stauffer, Jeff Ratliff, Dave Bettendorf

Westfall – Brad Rivers, Scott Exline, Bill Senter, Chris Cramer

Zane Trace – Keith Hood, Tony Fraley, Steve Duve, Dale Terry

John Knight is correct
Curt played for Garrett and Valentine was an assistant.
