Post by LICKING COUNTY FAN »

Last night under the lights at Fulton Field, in Lancaster, Ohio the Eagles from Grove City Christian came a calling on Lancaster Fisher Catholic, in what turned out to be a competitive football when all was said and done.

Aaron Van Fossan looked to have made a nice play at the 9:19 mark of the opening quarter, when he took down Kent Writesel for an four-yard-loss but a flag on the Irish negated the play. The drive continued to go forward for the Eagles with a thirty-four-yard run by Ian Sinclair(There were 2 number 6's on the roster)with 9:00 showing on the clock. The six-play, fifty-two-yard drive closed with a one-yard run by Sinclair and after the point after kick by Josh Vanecko made this a,7-0 contest.

The Irish tried to get things going when they handed the ball to #14(Not on any roster I could find) but Jacob Brunney made a nice play, holding the ball carrier to just a two-yard gain, with 7:08 left in the quarter. The drive did not get any better from there and a punt followed a few plays later.

At the 3:21 mark Allen McCall teamed up with Brendan Handy to take down Andrew Reynolds for a six-yard loss as the Fisher Catholic defense seemed to have recovered after giving up the early score. They forced an Eagle punt soon after.

The Irish found themselves facing a fourth and one, with 1:34 left in the fast moving opening quarter and they opted to go for it and that call was made good, when Brock Conrad followed his front line to pick up two yards and move the chains. The drive ended with :05 left in the quarter, when Conrad found Logan Loy for a nine-yard touchdown. The point after kick by Conrad locked this one up at seven.

The second quarter flew by as both teams defenses kept the offenses from doing much. There were some nice plays in the quarter and one of those came at the 6:24 mark The Eagles faced a fourth and four and they elected to go for it,the Irish defense Sinclair was held to just a three-yard gain. The Eagles offense would get two thirteen-yard runs by Sinclair. The first was at the 4:19 mark and the second one at the 3:09 mark. The Irish defense came up with another hold on fourth down at the 1:17 mark, when the Eagles elected to go for it, when they needed eight-yards to move the chains.Matt Bailey would be stopped four-yards short of the first down marker.

Just :47 into the third quarter Matt Bailey connected with Alex Schuler, for sixteen-yards on third and seventeen. The Eagles elected to go for it again on fourth down and it appeared they had the first down with a hard powerful run by Baily but the ball came loose and coming up with it for Fisher Catholic was Conrad.

Fisher Catholic looked to have taken advantage of the turnover at the 9:30 mark of the quarter, when Conrad connected with Daniel Turner for a fifty-yard touchdown, but a illegal receiver downfield was called on the Irish negating the huge play. A group of fathers setting to my right was unhappy with every call made or not made and this call sent them over the top. One of the Irish players had already looked up at them saying something as it seemed he was tired of them yelling about how poorly the players and refs were.

8:16 was the time remaining when Bailey scrambled his way to a first down as his team was facing third and eight. The Irish secondary had everyone covered, leaving Bailey one option and that was to use his feet to move the chains. With 7:13 left in the quarter Bailey had to use his feet again as he scrambled for a six-yards to bring up a third and four. At the 6:17 mark Brett Baker took down Mccall for A three-yard loss.

The Eagles got a twenty-eight-yard run by Bailey at the 4:46 mark. The with 4:17 left in the quarter Sinclair picked up eight-yards to keep Uncle Mo. on the Eagles side. The drive hit a snag with 2:58 showing on the clock, when Alex Schuler dropped a pass to bring up fourth and three. The drive ended three plays later on a Bailey found Quynten Jeffries for a eighteen-yard score, on a fourth and three call The point after kick made this a,14-7 game, with 2:52 left in the long quarter.

The quarter came to an end with a five-yard first down run by Mccall on a fourth and three call. Both teams took a lot of risk in this one as the playoffs and a league title are all but gone.

The fourth quarter went by very quickly as neither offense could overcome very aggressive defenses.
Some plays that showed both teams were putting every ounce of talent and skill they had made the quarter exciting.
With 11:13 left in the game Conrad putt the ball on the ground and the Eagles recovered it. I believe Adam Blake came up with it. The P.A. announcer was off his game as he did not call out very many plays and this was one of the many he did not cover very well.

At the 9:51 mark Quynten Jeffries dropped a pass that would have gone eighty-yards for an Eagles score.
With 4:07 left Trevor Bowen sacked the Eagles quarterback for a ten-yard loss.

2:34 was left when Conrad was picked off by the Eagles Baily to all but secure the win.

2:10 was the time left when Sinclair converted a fourth and five, with a first down run.
From there the Eagles waited for the clock to read 0:00 so that they could enjoy win number one of the 2016 football season.

Thanks for posting, LCF.

I figured this would be a pretty tough rebuilding year. Hard to replace the talented senior class that got us out first winning season since 2006 (yeah... it's been that long), last year.

I'm very surprised Grove City Christian won this game.

They turned out to be as evenly matched as any two teams I have watched this season.

Now that I look at it, the results of many of their games, even though they aren't the same teams, are very similar.

Nice report LCF and the pics are pretty well done. What kind of crowd turned-out?

It was a decent size crowd, with both teams struggling I was a little shocked it was as big as it was.
