Coal Grove downs GAHS, 67-13
Host Coal Grove scored early and often Friday night to hand visiting Gallis Academy a 67-13 football defeat.
The win left Coal Grove 5-1 on the year and 3-1 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Gallipolis dropped to 0-7 overall and 0-4 in the OVC.
Gallipolis will host Rock Hill Oct. 14 in the Blue Devils annual athletic hall of fame game. The Hornets will journey to Ironton in what may be the title game in this year’s OVC race.
Friday, Dan Rutherford returned Gallia’s opening kickoff 82 yards to give the Hornets a 6-0 lead. Jeb Jones kicked the point after.
Gallipolis came back in the first when QB Justin McClelland hit Cory Call with a 9-yard TD pass. Ty Howell’s point after tied the score at 7-7.
Coal Grove went ahead 14-7 on Jacob Clark’s 42 yard TD run and the rest is history.
The Hornets led 20-7 after one period, 40-13 at halftime and 53-13 going into the final stanza,
Coal Grove racked up 26 first downs to Gallia’s six and total yardage favored the Hornets, 507 to 136. Coal Grove ran 56 plays from scrimmage GAHS 53.
The win was Coal Grove’s 19th in the all-time series against Gallia’s 21 wins.
