SE Ohio in the NFL

Post by loganlocos »

I have had several conversations over the holidays about former SE District high school players to play in the NFL (or AFL in the pre-merger days).

Here's a short list I had. I figured others could help me out.

Don Fleming, Shadyside HS (1956), Florida - 3 years with the Browns

Coy Bacon, Ironton HS (1960), Jackson State - Def. Line; 14ish year NFL Career, pro-bowler

Dan Pride, Ironton HS (1960?), Tennessee State and Jackson State, Linebacker; played with the Bears

Ike Kelley, Bremen HS (Now Fairfield Union) (1962?), Ohio State, Linebacker; played for the Eagles

Greg Cook, Chillicothe HS (1965?), U Cincinnati, QB; played for the Bengals, AFL Rookie of the Year

Dick Adams, Athens HS (1966), Miami U - Def. Back; only played in the preseason with the Oilers, played 5 years in the Canadian Football League

Todd Snyder, Athens HS (1966), Ohio U - WR; three years with the Atlanta Falcons

Dave Green, Athens HS (1968), Ohio U - Kicker; six years with the Oilers, Bengals, and Bucs

Art Slichter, Miami Trace HS (1978), Ohio State - Quarterback; played with the Colts

Garin Veris, Chillicothe HS (1981), Stanford - DL; 7 years with New England and San Francisco

Ben Hartsock, Unioto HS (2000), Ohio State - TE/FB; 10 years with the Colts, Titans, Falcons, Jets, and Panthers

Chris Givens, Chillicothe HS (2007), Miami - WR; Saints

And if you count Lancaster:

Rex Kern; 1967; Ohio State; DB, three years with Baltimore and Buffalo

Rob Carpenter; 1973; Miami U; RB, ten years with Oilers, Giants and Rams

Bobby Carpenter; 2002; Ohio State; LB, 7 years with Dallas, Detroit, New England, and Miami

Jim Cordle; 2007; Ohio State; C, 3 years with the Giants

Mike Bartrum - Meigs HS - 17 years as a long snapper with Packers, Chiefs, and Eagles. Appeared in at least one super bowl and was selected to the Pro Bowl in his final season.

And of course it’s only a matter of time before Joe Burrows is added to the list.

Was just about to add Bartrum. Just completely slipped my mind as he is one of the guys I was talking about over the holidays.

And yes, Joe Burrow was the reason the subject came up, LOL

glen presnell got to pick the Detroit lions colors when the ironton tanks and Portsmouth Spartans combined to be the detroit lions. and for quite some time he held the distance record for an nfl field goal.

Didn’t a kid named Antonio from Portsmouth play for Green Bay about 10 years ago? Corner back?

Antonio Malone. I’m pretty sure he was invited to camp and played some preseason, but not sure if he made the team or not. Same with Gerald Cadogan, I want to say he was invited to camp with the panthers maybe? And didn’t coach Pendleton go to camp with the ravens and get hurt or something like that?

Logan High School
Harry Newman G-T AKR 1924 1924

Even I didn't know this.

Harry Newman graduated from LHS in 1916. He is in the school's Athletic Hall of Fame - I believe he became a very successful coach around Cleveland - Shaker Heights maybe?

But I did not know he played any professional football.

Ken Culbertson (LHS, 1973) played in preseason games for the Steelers and Cowboys after a successful college career at West Virginia but never made it past that point.

I don't know of Bob McBride ever playing professional football.

He played at Notre Dame and worked as an assistant for Frank Leahy. He later accepted - but ended up rejecting - the head coaching job with the LA Chargers to stay in South Bend in his business career.

Leahy was the first General Manager for the Chargers who played in the AFL - their owner was Barron Hilton.

I may be thinking about him going into the military after ND and not NFL. Can't remember when or where, but I heard him speak one time. It might have been at the old high school gym.
