I'm not sure if it is because the demographic in this forum is older and likely out of step. Or if it is due in part to geography and maybe a older influenced mind set or it could just be old fashioned hate out of a couple bordering fan bases. That's pretty much the only coherent explanations.

Yes, times have changed. Anything that can be done to promote an athlete is usually a good thing.

Preston at Ohio University barely played in high school and now will get drafted to the NBA

After he grew 4 inches, went to prep school, then Junior college, then created a mixtape himself and then OU called. He just didn't give up.
