Anyone have any info on the Trojans this coming fall? How did the weight room look this winter? Anyone move in or out? Any clue how many boys plan to come out? As far as returners, Drew Roe is back for his senior season. Kid has improved every year he’s been there. Pendleton will likely be his go to WR, he had a nice year. Is Bryant back? Is Carr healthy? Who will be the Trojans starting RB this fall? OL outlook? Not sure Portsmouth will have much size. Did the kicker graduate? He was awesome. Surely there’s someone on here who is close to the football program that can shed some light? Then again most Portsmouth posters have disappeared over the years. I think there’s maybe about 5 left.

The Bryant kid left, he's at Notre Dame now.

Several questions for Portsmouth football in 2021:

1. Will the Trojans have an improved defense which is a must to contend in the upper half of the OVC?
2. Will the participation numbers increase so the Trojans will have better depth?
3. Will the O-line's pass blocking be good enough to give Drew Roe enough time to throw, or open holes for Donovan Carr and Amare Johnson?
4. Will the kicking game be consistent for long kickoffs, extra points and FG's?
5. Will the special teams coverage on kicks limit return yardage?
6. Will the Trojans be the best conditioned team in the OVC?

If the answers to most of those questions is yes, then Portsmouth could move up to near the top of the OVC and be playoff bound.......if the answers to only a couple of those questions is yes, then I don't see PHS challenging the top half of the conference, or making the playoffs.

The Trojans do have some talented players.......Drew Roe, Donovan Carr, Amare Johnson, Reid Pendleton.......but they have to have a supporting cast around them to maximize their skills.

Coach Kalb has done a great job considering the issues that he has to face every year.

Trojans have a lot of work to do. Roe and Pendleton are very good. You can have elite receivers but if you don’t have a line it won’t matter. Defense was horrible and hope that improves. The kids have to want it and attend the weight room when it’s not mandatory. I’d focus my big kids on the offensive line. It won’t matter if you score 35 a game if you give up 45. I liked the spread offense and thought Johnson ran really well. 2-9 last year so can’t get any worse. Conditioning and strength have to be a priority. With 16 teams a region getting in 5-5 will probably be enough. But making it there can’t be enough. We have to win a playoff game eventually.

I assume Carr & Johnson will split carries at RB, with a few others mixed in as well. Roe and Pendleton seemed to have worked up really good chemistry last season. So there’s obviously playmakers on the offensive side of the ball, but none of that matters if Portsmouth doesn’t fix the problem that has plagued them for years, offensive line. I’d like to see some fire in the big boys up front, put in the extra work, get bigger, stronger faster and meaner. That said, defense has also been a major problem for the Trojans since the early 2000’s. Hoping to see improvement on that side of the ball. Won’t be long now boys. Summer has arrived!

Portsmouth always has skilled kids. Their track team seems to do well according to times. Just need to find a line.

The biggest improvement needs to be on defense. While a better O-line would be wonderful it wont matter if the defense gives up as many points as last season. Granted they did have some young/inexperienced players.

Thanks, Jason, for your work. You do a great job on various school records and I know from experience that it takes a lot of time to compile info like this. It is very hard to get everything exactly right.

A few additions to your records: Portsmouth made the playoffs in 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2007. Advanced to the regional finals in 2001, losing to Newark Licking Valley 28-27 on a missed extra point. In 2002, the Trojans lost to Portsmouth West at Ironton (I believe the score was 27-18), that year West advanced to the state championship game, losing to Kenton with QB Ben Mauk. The Trojans beat West in the regular season. In 2004, PHS lost to New Albany in the first round, while in 2007 the Trojans lost to Newark Licking Heights 42-35 in the first round. Shane Porter was a very good QB on the PHS team that lost to NLH.

In 2018, Portsmouth lost in the playoffs in the first round to Middletown Madison 26-0, while the very next year in 2019, PHS lost to West Lafayette Ridgewood 56-24 in the first round. In 2020, PHS opted into the playoffs and lost to Northwest 21-20 in the first round.

Including the 2020 opt in to the playoffs, Portsmouth should have a total of 12 playoff appearances, with 2 Final 4's, and 1 regional final. PHS was also the AP Poll champion in D3 in 2000.

Portsmouth's undefeated team in 1953 was the only year that the Trojans won the Greater Ohio League, a league in which the Trojans were a member for almost 30 years. Leroy Carr was an outstanding RB on that team, and also averaged 23 PPG in basketball.

Corrected, trojandave.

I don’t think that many people realize the Strength of Schedule that Portsmouth used to play. In 1931, here was Portsmouth’s schedule:

Week 1:New Boston (in SEOAL at the time and very good in the 20’s and 30’s)
Week 2: Columbus East
Week 3: Huntington, WV
Week 4: Cincinnati Withrow
Week 5: Hamilton, OH
Week 6: Wayne, WV
Week 7: Middletown
Week 8: Cleveland Glenville
Week 9: Chillicothe
Week 10: Ironton

Or, 1938:
Week 1: Akron South
Week 2: Cincinnati Elder (in the GCL now)
Week 3: Springfield
Week 4: Steubenville (dominant for 100 years)
Week 5: Chillicothe
Week 6: Middletown
Week 7: Columbus South
Week 8: Ironton
Week 9: Toledo DeVilbiss
Week 10: Huntington, WV

Or 1953:
Week 1: Columbus Aquinas
Week 2: Ashland, KY
Week 3: Springfield
Week 4: Cincinnati Central
Week 5: Middletown
Week 6: Dayton Stivers (when their athletic programs were the measuring stick in Dayton)
Week 7: Hamilton
Week 8: Steubenville Central Catholic (who was nearly as good as Steubenville was in that era)
Week 9: Ironton

In today’s standard, this would be like any local school not only playing St. Ignatius or Moeller, but also dominating them week in and out. I think that a lot of people forget that prior to the 2000’s, Portsmouth was just as equally in the conversation as a locally known powerhouse in the state as well as Ironton.

Jason Vorhees: You are absolutely right about Portsmouth's schedule from decades past. The Trojans schedule in addition to the always tough Greater Ohio League included teams from around the state. I remember PHS playing Canton McKinley and Upper Arlington in the late 60's. UA at that time won a couple of state titles then, and yet one year, I believe it was 1969, the Trojans only lost to them 27-0. Middletown beat the Trojans 98-14 (yes, 98 points) in the mid 60's, then 2 years later in 1966 Portsmouth beat the Middies at homecoming 36-20. Portsmouth also played Massillon when the Tigers were perennial mythical state champions.

I would say with confidence that there has been no school in the SE district that has played more teams from around the state than Portsmouth. Of course today PHS is a much smaller school and schedules with a more local emphasis, in addition to being members of the Ohio Valley Conference. Getting Wheelersburg back on the regular season schedule is a must to me, because it is a stain on the Trojans' football program to not play them.

Our football history is better than some think but it is overshadowed by the incredible basketball success that the school has had for 100 years.

SciotoCFootball: I don't know if practices are open, but as of right now in early June there are football activities going on at Trojan Coliseum normally from Monday--Thursday.

Another little tidbit of trivia about Portsmouth Football:
Paul Walker (basketball award named after him) actually coached Football at Portsmouth in the late 1940’s, 1946 if I’m not mistaken.

Jason Vorhees: I didn't know that Walker coached football, but I do know that he coached the basketball Trojans in 1945 to a 12-11 record. He was not retained at Portsmouth for whatever reason, then he went to Middletown and won 5 state championships (1947, 1952, 1953, 1956, 1957). He retired as the winningest basketball coach in OHSAA history at that time with 695 wins. Of course that record has since been broken, by such coaches as Norm Persin of Chesapeake, Oak Hill, and Valley, and Joe Petrocelli of Kettering Alter.

Talk about the one that got away.......that was Paul Walker leaving Portsmouth.

What’s everyone’s realistic expectations for this coming season? I’ll say 5-5. Games they can win against Rock Hill, South Point & Valley. Could go either way against Coal Grove, Chesapeake and West. Likely losses against Ironton, Fairland & Gallia. Unknown when it comes to Deer Park.

Someone correct me on this if I’m wrong, but I believe Jason Sparks the former HC at Portsmouth is the OC at Cincinnati Deer Park.

It all depends on three teams.. Fairland, Gallia, and West. Fairland lost some key players, specifically Hunt. Heard Gallia is going to be a little young/inexperienced and one person even called it a rebuilding year. West is on the rise no doubt about that.. so will be curious to see how much of an improvement they can make. These games will be the difference makers in The Trojans having a solid season.

How the Trojans fare will come down to how the defense plays.......giving up 30 PPG won't lead to many wins. Porous defense has been a long standing problem for Portsmouth football (for almost 20 years). PHS's offense usually averages in the range of 21-30 PPG, which should be good enough with a respectable defense to post a winning season. The defense, however, has cost the Trojans time and again. If the D can hold opponents to around 20 PPG, Portsmouth could post 6-7 wins tops, with a good shot at the playoffs if that happens. I look for the offense to score around 24-30 PPG, with Drew Roe, Donovan Carr, Amare Johnson, and Reid Pendleton being one of the better playmaking groups in the OVC. Roe is one of the better QB's in the SE district, and hopefully the O-line will give him time to throw upfield. All told, Portsmouth could possibly be looking at a top 3 finish in the OVC.

GO TROJANS!!.....DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE!!

Is Bryant still at ND? Someone told me he’s back at Portsmouth? Asking because I’m not sure how reliable they are lol.
