Most Wins - SE District Programs

Post by loganlocos »

Thanks to https://www.fourseasonsfootball.com/ and the OHSAA, I've attempted to compile a list of the all-time winningest programs in the SE District.

Let me know if you see any errors and I will correct them. Also, it should be noted that some of the best programs in the area are "newer" programs and won't rank as high as they might expect to because of that fact (N-Y, Trimble, Sheridan, etc.)

Programs with at least 400 wins:

1. Ironton - 703-358-45 (10th in Ohio)
2. Jackson - 635-413-48 (30th in Ohio)
3. Portsmouth - 588-496-42 (Not listed on the OHSAA list)
4. Logan - 585-415-37 (44th in Ohio)
5. Wheelersburg - 572-265-6 (Needs upated on OHSAA list)
6. Gallipolis - 574-420-39 (Not listed)
7. Athens - 547-458-39 (Not listed)
8. Coal Grove - 542-305-27
9. Chillicothe - 519-552-49
10. Marietta - 498-569-36

11. New Lexington - 496-405-37
12. Portsmouth Notre Dame - 490-393-22
13. Crooksville - 485-441-23
14. Wellston - 458-517-36
15. Waverly - 457-392-17
16. Oak Hill - 448-426-34
17. Portsmouth West - 440-292-10
18. Sciotoville East - 423-422-32
19. Morgan - 418-464-36
20. Chesapeake - 417-444-28
21. Adena - 401-395-20
22. South Point - 400-451-31

Other programs of note:

23. Sheridan - 393-296-6
24. Belpre - 376-307-16
25. Trimble - 366-220-8
26. Rock Hill - 366-465-26
27. Nelsonville-York - 356-200-4
28. Valley - 354-271-3
29. Fairland - 353-342-6

Out of the teams listed, I ranked the top 10 in terms of win percentage to shed a different light on some teams that have almost 50 seasons less than others.

All Time Win Percentages in Southeastern Ohio

1. Wheelersburg- 68.0%
2. Ironton- 64.8%
3. Nelsonville York- 63.9%
4. Sheridan- 62.4%
5. Trimble- 62.3%
6. Coal Grove- 61.9%
7. Portsmouth West- 60%
8. Jackson- 59.8%
9. Logan- 58.4%
10. Galia Academy- 57.5%

Used info from fourseasons.com and only up to date as of 8-16-21

Yep, I just hadn't done that math yet. Didn't mean to imply that total wins was the only measurement.

This does include playoffs to right?Because the top 5 percentage regular season would be higher. The top 5 on this list plays 11 to 14 games a year usually and a couple teams has played 15 which brings percentage down.

This is every single win, divided into every game ever played. An all time winning percentage.

Ties should count as half a win.

I used fourseasons.com and they had it figured up on their spreadsheet. Might have to double check though I just assumed it was accounting for ties, I could be wrong if you get a chance to double check it.

Oh yeah, he's counting ties as half a win in his calculations. So all good.

Great work, Locos......you are one of, if not the most passionate football fan in our district. You have a great appreciation for the football history of the SE district and of course your Logan Chieftains. Keep up the good work.

I'm proud of Portsmouth's record considering the competition that the Trojans played outside the SE district when PHS was a much larger school. Being a long time member of the Greater Ohio League (Middletown, Hamilton, Springfield, Lima), Portsmouth quite often was near the bottom of that great league in the standings, but playing in the GOL was a great source of community pride. In addition to the GOL teams, PHS played Canton McKinley, Massillon, Cincinnati Elder, and Steubenville just to name a few.

Westfall is at 58.2%, but with far fewer games since their first season was 1964.

My apologies, I just went with teams off the first mentioned.

Thanks for info. I figured our win percentage would be a little better than number 10.

It's crazy how wheelersburg only has one losing season since the 60's

Does anyone have the total wins for Warren Local? I know the 2000s have been brutal for them, but they were once a proud program. I'd have to imagine they would be close to 300 wins in their 50 years of football.

I have Jackson at 639-417-48 through 2020. 640-417-48 after last night.

The OHSAA website is missing Jackson's 2016 season (as well as 2020). They're showing the record at 628-411-48 currently.

Four seasons football.com has them at 273-322-11

I used fourseasonsfootball.com. Not perfect - but he does a great job. Trust your numbers over anyone’s though, haha

Looks like the following games are missing when comparing it to the Jackson records that I have. 18 wins (15 listed below plus the games against Alumni that I also mention below), 7 losses, and 2 ties. Hopefully my eyes aren't playing tricks on me late at night, but I think these are the discrepancies.

1898 - Wellston Independent - W 15-0
1898 - McArthur - W 18-0
1901 - Waverly - W 23-0
1901 - Waverly - W 16-0
1902 - Portsmouth - W 5-0
1903 - Waverly - W 12-0
1903 - Waverly - L 0-6
1903 - Columbus North - T 0-0
1904 - Wellston Independent - W 10-0
1904 - Wellston Independent - W 28-0
1905 - Wellston - W 5-0
1906 - Waverly - W 14-0
1906 - Logan - W 29-0
1906 - Athens - W 5-0
1906 - Portsmouth YMCA - L 0-18
1907 - Nelsonville - W 63-0
1907 - Portsmouth - W 7-5
1908 - Portsmouth - L 0-28
1908 - Wellston - T 11-11
1908 - Athens - L 0-6
1910 - Kingston - L 0-11
1914 - Portsmouth - L 6-25
1915 - Gallipolis - W 13-0
1915 - Wellston - L 0-46

Then there are also 3 wins against Jackson's Alumni team, which have been counted (obviously debatable) in 1912, 1916, and 1919. There is also a tie against the Alumni in 1910 in my records, but he's showing a tie against Chillicothe that year, which is not in the records that I have . Those kind of cancel each other out. As you are well aware of, a lot of the earliest game records are pretty shaky and difficult to prove out even for the most reliable statisticians/historians. I wish I had been able to do all the verification as you did with Logan's records.
