Hiring Committes: Who should be on them?

Post by sgtwilliamjames »

people talk about hiring football coaches as important hires, and unlike the track coach or tennis coach spot, the football spot is usually a committee thing..

who should be on these committees? should the community be represented in the hiring process? who decides what community members are one such groups?

my friend Bill D. said to me, "anybody from outside the school who seeks to be on a committe hiring a highschool football coach is the last person who should be on that committee. Have you not seen Friday night lights? that person has an axe to grind"

Heard Wellston had a QB dad on the committee. Seems like that went well for them.

The BEST thing about people from Wellston is that they have JACKSON on their license plates!

I vote parents whose kids don't get much playing time. They seem to know more than the coach and it's definitely not because their kid isn't talented, so lets give them a shot!

Principal, Athletic Director, BOE Member and 2 or 3 people who have a football background. Set the criteria: they must have had successful head coaching experience on the varsity/college level, retired and possess a non biased opinion. Those are the people who should be making these decisions. Keep the parents and community members out of it.

Add to that all the daddy ball people. They know more than anyone and the bonus is if the committee doesn’t like any of the candidates the daddy ballers can take the job.

You need a person who has them Pendleton boys on speed dial so you have a chance to talk to one or both of them. They should be the favorite for any job.

Often times one board member is all you need for a committee of one. Take Belpre for example. Last time Mr. M was the entire committee and made one of it not the best hire the school has ever made. Fast forward to this year and the AD got involved and it’s been a circus and they still don’t have a coach. Go figure.

According to the Ohio School Board Associaton, BOE members should not be part of ab=nying hiring committees other than the superintendent.

I’ve seen that standard disregarded more than once.

Seems like having a few solid boosters would be essential.
