Easier said than done

Not all schools are in great shape financially and can just make up a job for someone to do so they can be a football coach

What’s an extra teacher cost? At most $70,000 of an 8 figure budget? If he’s a great football coach, it’s the best community relations tool you can have.

It’s worth it if he’s worth it. Find a way.

“Community relations tool…” means nothing unless he can build a football team that sells more game tickets, concessions, etc. Return on the $70k investment is what matters.

And yes, $70k is a big deal if the school is fighting just to stay out of the red. Which takes us back to “what’s the ROI from paying this coach?”

I love football as much as anybody, but it would be very hard to establish that a HS football team in SEO could generate everything it needs to pay for itself, especially if you are manufacturing a $70k position for a teacher.

Many mid-major D-1 college programs run in the red. Why do you think Kent State made a trip to Arkansas this fall? To help pay the bills, of course.

Minford has not been in a great financial position for years due to various issues, and have not filled some positions of teachers who retired or left so just “creating” a teaching job is not so simple.

If they just create a job to get a FB coach then they better check and see if the mules of muletown have gotten into the water supply.

Football is an education in and of itself. Lessons learned on the gridiron certainly applies to everyday life. You need a coach/teacher to articulate what transpires on Friday night to future success and belonging to cohesive team. Wins and losses matter, but they aren't necessarily how we should judge success and/or failure. The overwhelming majority of high school athletes are done their senior year. Their future success can be attributed to lessons learned from their high school experience.

Paying out settlements sure puts a cramp on the financial situation.

Agree. $70k is a big bill for many schools.

Many people are throwing out this $70k figure and talking about creating a job. I don’t think public schools work this way in 2023. That $70k in salary probably costs the district another $50k in insurance and STRS retirement. Also depending on Minford’s negotiated agreement, any “created” job might have to go through internal bidding first, meaning that the job created for a coach might be taken by someone in-house first.

Just a long winded way of saying there are a lot of potential hurdles in hiring someone from out of district to coach if it’s dependent on a teaching job.

Excellent points. Have seen many coaching jobs go down the list of choices because of things like in-house posting and teaching positions that need filled first.

Every district runs in its own way. One district might pay a coach to not coach while another district will not be interested in fighting the local teacher association. Another district might have the luxury of putting a coach in a grant-funded spot doing makeup credits.

Does anybody know the candidate’s teaching credential?

It sounds like nothing has changed in Minford? You would think if you really wanted a good coach nothing would stop you from making it happen. I’m sure a less than average teacher will fill in soon or maybe just hire someone who teaches in another district close lol

Settlements were paid by insurance so that has no bearing. Moreso the years of failing to maintain sufficient funds in accounts for maintenance and improvements and robbing Peter to pay Paul end. Things have broken, needed upgraded, etc.
