Reds sign Ryan Madson (32 Saves 34 Opps 2.37 ERA last season) to a 1 year deal

I'm glad they signed Madsen instead of Cordero. If they don't sign Phillips to an extension they are going to have some difficult holes to fill in the next off season.

Until then, I think the Reds have what it takes to make some noise this year. Cueto, Latos, and Leake are excellent starters and if Bailey can continue to improve they are going to have a nice rotation. Arroyo is still Arroyo though.

I hope Billy Hamilton gets a shot in spring training.

Cincy made deals with Bailey, Bray and Janish

Both have options for an additional year. I think Madsen's option for 2013 is 11.5 which will still be a bargain if he continues to pitch well as a closer.

Jocketty has said they are exploring trade options for a backup SS for Cozart. I personally think we have enough in house options for that role. Janish and Frazier comes to mind but i'd rather them give Frazier the chance and let Janish improve his batting skills at Louisville.

Looks to me like its 2012 or bust. They won't have enough money to keep Phillips in 2013, and Votto will need to go due to his cost also the only hometown discount he might give would be to Toronto.

I like the idea of Frazier being on the roster to back up SS and other positions and leaving Janish in AAA to call up if Cozart gets injured or otherwise shows he's not up to the starting job.

They have about a 2 year window to win. Anything short of a World Series appearance would be a major disappointment. In about 3 or 4 years we will see a completely different Reds ball club. Votto, Phillips, Latos, Cueto, and Arroyo will probably all be gone.

If I were a betting man I'd say Baker will be gone after this season. It will be interesting to see if Walt sticks around after his contract is up too. I'd say he's about tired of having to deal with such a small market budget.

When they first signed Chapman, I remembering reading in the news release that they used money that came from some kind of special fund. I think it had something to do with rookies or something like that but i'll have to look it up. None of the money came directly from payroll if i'm correct.

Reds acquire Wilson Valdez from Phillies for reliever Jeremy Horst, sign journeyman infielder Willie Harris, agree to terms with Masset, and are close to getting lefty Jeff Francis.

Masset has great stuff but awful location and is painful to watch.

Masset is pretty much useless during the first half of the season. After that he pitches decent. They also came to terms with Arrendondo on a 2 year 2 mil deal.

Actually, except for lapses early, Massett has been just fine. Seems like he nibbles too much at times. But is very valuable to this pen if he comes through like I hope he can.
