Reds pitcher Sonny Gray was placed on the 10-day injured list by the Reds on Sunday because of a strain in the right side of his mid-back, a move retroactive to Friday. He is 5-3 with a 3.94 ERA in 9 starts, but has allowed 11 runs in his last 2 outings, after only giving up 9 runs in 41 2/3 innings over his first seven starts.

Tyler Stephenson is a rookie, but he was in total command of the moment. Used as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the 7th inning, Stephenson hit a two-out, two-run homerun that gave the Reds a 3-1 victory over the Pirates in game one of a doubleheader at Great American Ball Park on Monday. There were two outs in the bottom of the 7th against lefty reliever Sam Howard when another rookie Jose Garcia battled back from an 0-2 count, and hit a soft single into left field. On a 1-0 count, Stephenson followed with his second homerun of the season to win the game.

Well the Reds did manage to win both ends of the doubleheader today and tonight, winning the first game 3-1 and the second game 9-4. I'm happy that they won both games, but they are still not hitting the ball that well. They were outhit in both games, in the second game they scored 9 runs on only 5 hits, of which 3 of those 5 were homeruns. It was against the poor Pirates, but any win is a good win.

If the Cincinnati Reds are going to pull off a run to the postseason, they're going to need some exceptional performances from players when pressed into roles. They got one on Tuesday evening from Michael Lorenzen. He was spot on in a spot-start, as he and the bullpen made an early lead stand up for a 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Reds now have their longest winning streak of the year at four games which is coming at the right time.

Cincinnati's Luis Castillo pitched a masterful seven innings, Shogo Akiyama drove in the games only run, and the Reds extended their winning streak to a season high 5 games, with a 1-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night. Castillo retired 9 out of the last 10 batters he faced, and only gave up 3 hits and 1 walk with 10 strikeouts. I think the Reds only have maybe 9 games left in the season, even though they are still not really hitting that well, their pitching has been pretty good lately. I think about 6 of those remaining games are against the White Sox and the Twins, two of the better American league teams. Geronimo and I have been pretty rough on 'Gold Chain" recently, and he has been pretty good his last couple outings. The Reds just need to keep winning, they might just be able to sneak into one of those wild-card spots.

Reds in the playoffs as one of the five wild card teams? Given the mediocrity in the NL I guess they have a shot, until you remember they close out with two three game sets with the Chisox and Twins sandwiched around three with the Brewcrew. The Sox and Twins are both playing over .600 baseball.

Jesse Winker hit a three-run homerun, one of four homeruns off of White Sox starter Jonathan Stiever, and the Reds extended it's surge into playoff contention with a 7-1 win Friday night for it's season high 6th win in a row. Stiever got hit hard in his first major league road appearance. He not only gave up Winker's three run homerun, but also gave up solo HR's Joey Votto, Nick Castellanos and Tucker Barnhart. Tyler Mahle (2-2) got his first win for the Reds since Aug 28th, only allowing 4 hits, with 8 SO's in 5 2/3 innings.

Tim Anderson hit two of the Chicago White Sox's five solo homeruns in overpowering the Reds Saturday night 5-0. The Reds fell a game behind St Louis in the NL Central, as the Cardinals rallied to beat the Pirates 5-4. Trevor Bauer suffered the loss, as he gave up the first two homeruns.

Sunday's 7-3 Reds victory over the American League Central leading White Sox, took care of some much needed business with wins in two out of the three games in the series. All that's left are six games, three that are very critical against their National League Central-rival Milwaukee Brewers at home, followed by three more against the playoff bound Minnesota Twins in Minneapolis. All told, I think the Reds walked 11 times in the game today, with everyone in the starting lineup but one player walking at least one time.

Eugenio Suarez hit a two run home run, Luis Castillo won his forth straight start, and streaking Cincinnati beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-3 Monday night. The Reds (28-27) won for the eighth time in nine games, a season best surge that's put them back in playoff contention.

The Reds missed out on a great chance to put just a little distance between themselves and the Brewers tonight as the Brew crew rallied in the seventh inning to take a 3-2 lead, and hold on for the win. Sonny Gray pitched five strong innings, only giving up one run for the Reds.
