Overall not a bad opening series playing at the defending champs stadium! I think we showed some good stuff and have some things we can still shape up. Mike Minor has been sent to AA for a rehab assignment so he will be joining the rotation soon! Few guys off to a slow start, hopefully can get on track for our 2 game home stint.

Need to take both games against Cleveland before we travel out west for 7 games vs the Dodgers and Padres

Home Opening Day today! Can the Reds make Cincinnati fans happy today with a win?

Cleveland is on a roll their last two games with the offenses putting up big numbers. Let's hope the Reds can shut them down and pick up two more wins on the early season!

Opening day in Cincinnati. Tradition and hope for the season transcends reality. With that in mind I ran across a rambling article about opening day, Reds history and remembrance of players past and present. Long but worth the read

Did Phil Castellini Threaten To Move The Reds Franchise Out of Cincinnati?

From The NY Post:

Phil Castellini, son of Reds owner Bob Castellini and president of the organization, joined 700 WLW in Cincinnati and basically told the team’s fans their options were blind support or to have them sell the team to someone who would move it.

The younger Castellini was asked, after 15 years, why fans should have faith in ownership and the management that the rebuild will be worthwhile.

Well, where are you gonna go? Let’s start there. Sell the team to who?” Castellini asked, rhetorically and condescendingly. “That’s the thing. You want to have this debate? If you want to look at what you’d do to make this team more profitable, make more money, compete more in the current economic system that this game exists [in], it would be to pick it up and move it to somewhere else.”
(excerpts)

Did he mispeak? Were his words taken out of context? Or did he tell Reds fans to stifle their criticisms of ownership or the team would abandon Cincinnati for greener pastures elsewhere?

No, he said the quiet part out loud is all.

Tough loss against Cleveland today. Down early and then battle back. I thought it was a mistake to take out Tony Santillan after he looked great on something like 11 pitches. Hoping for a great outing tomorrow from Lodolo. I’m very excited to watch him.

Rough ML debut for Lodolo. He got beat up pretty good. Clearly he has good stuff, but he did not today. Bullpen was average today, gave up a few runs, several hits but could’ve been worse. Back on the road for the next 7 games, then a day off before returning home. Out west taking on the Dodgers and Padres. 10:10 first pitch the next 3 nights.

Trenchfoot and Geronimo you guys crack me up! I feel your frustration Geronimo but the good news is the season just started so let's hope the Reglegs can get this ship patched up before it sinks to the deep, dark, cold depths of the central division.

A look at the 22' Reds from a St. Louis Cardinal point of view:

From Redbirdrants:

After Phil Castellini’s comments, it’s clear that the Cincinnati Reds are a dumpster fire — and a team that the Cardinals don’t have to worry about.

Entering the 2022 season, the National League Central was widely expected to come down to the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals.

The Chicago Cubs deserve to have at least some consideration, especially as Seiya Suzuki continues his flaming hot start. But the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds were never expected to contend, with the Reds trading Jesse Winker, Eugenio Suarez, Sonny Gray, Tucker Barnhart and others.

Then Phil Castellini, the Reds’ president and COO, said this in response to a question about selling the team: “Where are you going to go? Sell the team to who? That’s the other thing: You want to have this debate? … What would you do with this team to make it more profitable, make more money, compete more in the current economic system that this game exists in? It would be to pick it up and move it somewhere else. Be careful what you ask for.”

Dumpster. Fire.

Castellini was later given a chance to apologize after his comments went viral, but he didn’t backtrack. He doubled down.

Dumpster. Fire.

Then, later that night, Castellini issued an apology through the Reds’ media relations department. By then, the damage was already done, and all that was missing from this was a Nick Castellanos home run.

Comments like this are sure to resonate among both players and fans for quite awhile. Teams can use these comments against Castellini and the Reds in future free-agent negotiations. It’s not going away any time soon and, as long as he is still a prominent member of the Reds, it will only continue to hurt them.

Thus eliminating at least one team that the Cardinals have to worry about in 2022 and beyond.

Thoughts?

I am sure potential ownership groups in Charlotte, Durham-Raleigh, Las Vegas, Montreal, and Portland Oregon are dusting off their business plans after the Reds ownership flipped off the fan base.

Sad but true Johnny Bench more or less said the Reds are with a owner that turn his back on the fans !!! The hit king turns 81 today Pete Rose !!!
