Rumored Proposal For Covid19 Testing Protocols For P5 Schools

Post by Omega »

From Sports Illustrated:

College football players who test positive for COVID-19 this fall will be required to miss at least 10 days of competition, and that number is even higher—a full two weeks—for those who are found to have had contact with a person who tested positive.

These requirements are part of a medical document the Power 5 conferences have drafted to add uniformity to virus testing protocols and response procedures. Sports Illustrated obtained a copy of a draft of the document from July 8. The document is not finalized, but is expected to be released soon by the Power 5 and the NCAA, which are working in concert to create universal, minimum testing standards.

The six-page document outlines weekly in-season testing requirements, response protocols for positive tests, contact-tracing plans and considerations for game cancellations. “This document is meant to guide institutions in the minimum necessary requirements needed to participate in athletics in the coming year,” the document reads.

College teams will be required to test football players within 72 hours of games using the standard PCR test. Game officials in football and basketball should also be tested weekly, because of their close contact with athletes, the document says. The document, however, does not require tests for coaches, though staff members must wear a mask on the sideline if they are not tested in the same way athletes are. As for other high-risk sports, athletes should be tested within 72 hours of the first game of a week’s set of games. (Except)

If the proposals are adopted, it might make for an interesting season in terms of outcomes. What if testing and quarantine protocols force star players or the majority of a team to sit out?

More to the point, how many will turn a blind eye and cheat, as is common in NCAA athletics, all in the pursuit of winning ? Cheating is at epic levels, from major to minor violations. As proven over and over again, many coaches are without ethics. And in this case with lives at stake, a lifetime ban would be prudent.

A pretty insightful post, and with the pressure to win with some of these schools, as well as some of the conferences, this could very well ring true. There are many different ways that the Medical Staff's at a lot of these schools handle information pertaining to their athletes. We saw it just recently when some of the schools around the country, would give numbers every other day as to how many of their athletes had tested positive for Covid-19, and yet there were other schools that never ever released any information at all. lAlso this was in the early stages of just voluntary workouts, the real pressure of football practice and the football season is yet to come. I'm not implying that Coaching Staff's would try to influence decisions regarding whether or not an athlete was healthy enough to participate, but I think that it has happened in the past. I hope that the almighty $$$ and the pressure to win in so many different circumstances, is not the determining factor in going forward.
