Palaie Gaoteote Awaits Eligibility Clearance To Play For Buckeyes

Speaking at the Big 10 media days, OSU coach Ryan Day said that Palaie Gaoteote is enrolled in school, is participating in team activities, but is waiting on NCAA eligibility clearance before he can officially join the team and play in games.

The transfer linebacker from USC was being counted on to add depth to OSU's LB corps. The talented but oft injured PG very well may not play for for OSU in 2021.

Coach Day, without giving specifics, said the transfer was not being challenged but PG's basic eligibility was being reviewed by the NCAA. From that, maybe the issue is academics or unresolved infractions at USC.

Marcus Hooker Reinstated To Buckeye Football Team

Coach Day, speaking at the Big 10 media days, stated that defensive back Marcus Hooker has been reinststed to the team.

Hooker was suspended back in March after a much publicized DWI incident. Hooker had a similar incident back in 2018.

Hopefully Hooker's third chance will allow him to get his life back on track to the point he can actually contribute to the team.

5 star quarterback Quinn Evers, a class of 2022 committ to OSU, states he may skip his senior year of high school and join the 2021 Buckeyes. A major reason if he does enroll early at State would be the ability to make money off of his name, image, and likeness. So I guess NIL money making potential will be part of the recruiting pitch going forward. The rich get richer. Also if he joined the team in 2021, there are some who feel the extraordinarily talented Texan QB could win the starters job before the season is over.

Money is going to ruin the high school game now. They don't realize the can of worms they just opened.

Yeah, it not if but when. The NFHS current position does not allow for NIL for high school athletes, yet where I live, you hear a beginning drumbeat for it from parents. Using the logic allowing college NIL, high school NIL probably would pass legal muster. Sigh, change is painful Cbolt.

OSU Loses 2022 Commitment by 5 star cornerback;

Given OSU seems not to be hog wild on NIL, is that a factor or does the kid just want to play close to home? Also rumblings of 2022 5 star QB recruit Quinn Ewers may decommit from OSU if not allowed to enroll, play and earn NIL in 2021. Seems NIL money has become a recruiting issue.

Speaking of Quinn Ewers

Quinn Evers Will Enroll at OSU and Play For The Buckeyes In 2021

Wow, OSU will have three 5 stars and one 4 star recruit competing for the starting QB job. Ewers will be coming in without benefit of spring practice, but despite the inexperience, many observers feel his talent is so great he will be the starting QB before seasons end. The other side of the coin is Ewers joining the team, may disrupt the QB room and team chemistry. That and it shows how much the ability to profit from NIL will play into recruiting.

Thoughts?

On one hand Ewers is probably the highest rated QB OSU has ever gotten. On the other hand, the QB room just got blown up with dynamite.

I think CJ Stroud is the man this year. Ewers will collect a million plus in NIL and start either next year or the following year, determined by how well Stroud performs

The world of college football is upside down when NIL sponsorship news outweighs on field news.

OSU negotiates jersey sales group licensing deal for its athletes:

Miami (The U) secures NIL deal that will pay its scholarship football players $6K a piece:

As to actual football, OSU opens fall camp 8/4

OSU fall practice opened today and the Bucks have already lost a player to injury. Coach Ryan Day reported DL Tyler Friday is out for most of the season with an undisclosed injury. Friday was expected to be heavily involved in the defensive line rotation.

One thing that could happen is the standout athletes might get fat and happy with all this college money now and not be in such a hurry to leave their school for the pros. That would be an upside but I still don't like it.

I read one article by a marketing exec who felt the big money NIL may be a fleeting thing if the companies making the payments do not see a return on their investment. Yet the potential for abuse is there since the NCAA pretty much has issued no rules. I think we are on the cusp of the programs wanting to pursue the big time breaking away from the NCAA and setting up their own association and rules. I guess it would still be college football but it would essentially be a professional league.

Oh to be young and athletically gifted:

Sawyer gets use of a big honking truck to tool around in as part of his NIL deal. Not bad for a kid who has yet to play a snap of college football.
