College Football Week 2 review

Post by The Gloaming »

The college football season is moving at full steam, perhaps courtesy of the Purdue Boilermakers, towards week 3. But a lot has happened that needs some attention. Let’s take a look at some of the key takeaways from week 2 in College Football.

Sparty Survives– Michigan State entered week 2 against Oregon carrying a bag of rocks. Connor Cooks play in week 1 was not was fans in East Lansing were expecting out of the Heisman hopeful. The defense looked sketchy at times against Western Michigan, especially the secondary that made QB John Robix look like a Heisman candidate. Fortunately Sparty responded. Connor Cook made it look easy on Michigan States first possesion marching down the field for a score that took just 3 plays, taking a page right out of the Ducks book. Oregon, though not on the same level as last years team, showed that they will be able to score but the Ducks defense will struggle against high powered offenses like USC and UCLA. Stay out of California all together. Sparty looked in control up 31-21 late in the game but gave up a very quick score putting Oregon in striking distance. The Ducks made a rare stop on defense, holding Michigan State to a 3 and out and at this point, the hush that fell over spartan stadium was deafening. But Michigan State proved why they are a top 10 team, putting Oregon in insurmountable field position and the Ducks flew home with a loss.
This was a huge home win for Michigan State and for the big ten who had not had a big win in the regular season in years. And if I’m voting on the top teams in the country, Sparty jumps ohio state with an impressive win over a quality team. The buckeyes offense played uninspired football in a 38-0 win over Hawaii, a game that was much closer than that score indicates. More on them later.

TCU, Alabama and the rest of the contenders– The days of the longhorns dominating the state of Texas in football are long gone and there’s a new horned force who is here to stay. TCU, the Horned Frogs came into week 2 off a nice win at Minnesota…in September, words not often uttered. Treyvon Boykin, although he put up modest number in game 1, was disappointing only in the sense that he is a guy expected to put up 400yds and 5 TD’s a game. Can he get a mulligan? Boykin gave a stone cold stunner to Stephen F. Austin to the tune of 285 passing yards and 4tds. Even more impressive was the Stingy TCU defense, without 2 starters mind you, that held SFU to 167 total yards, 93 of those came off a late shut out preventing score by SFU QB Jason John Jaspermen. Kolby Listenbee buzzed up the WR draft charts with 142yds on 6 catches. TCU is rolling folks.

Speaking of rolling, Roll Tide. Alabama crushed Middle Tennessee State 37-10 in a game that wasnt as close as the score indicated(and yes, they still won by 4tds). Derrick Henry has surpassed Ezelkiel Elliot as the best running back in college football and it’s not even close. The Heisman front runner pounded MTSU for 96yds and 3 touchdowns on only 18 carries, making the most of his touches. Alabama chose to not force the issue with Henry, who impressed with limited touches and took to the sky behind the arm of Jake Coker, who had 214yds and a touchdown. The Tides defense needs work and Nick Saban will take care of that. Multiple INT opportunities where Alabama’s defense quite literally, dropped the ball, can’t happen going forward if they’re going to contend with the likes of TCU and others.

The most disappointing performance in the top 5 came from the ohio state buckeye. Don’t let the 38-0 score fool you, the buckeyes looked out of sync on offense and had to be bailed out by a great defensive effort. Perhaps a short week had the buckeye hungover a bit but on the other side of the ball, Hawaii had to travel from….HAWAII to Columbus, Ohio which last time i checked wasn’t a direct flight. Urban Meyer is thanking his lucky stars that the silver bullets showed up to play because his offense is a mess. The days of it being “a great problem to have,” referring to 2 guys who can play QB, “next man up,” isn’t the fairy tale buckeye fans were hoping for. There was no fluidity to neither Cardale Jones or JT Barretts (or the 7 other guys Meyer paraded out to take the snaps). Meyer needs to pick a guy now and stop this nonsensical, gimmicky offense. It’s not working. Braxton Miller was humbled with an average performance and Ezekial Elliott once again showed how limited he is as a running back. The comparisons to Barry Sanders are laughable at this point although it’s true, Zeke is either giving you an 80yd touchdown or he’s tackled 2 yards over the line of scrimmage. See the Latter. The buckeyes are #1 in some polls, living off of last years underdog, playoff victory but are playing like the team that many said was undeserving of the 4th spot. When Sparty comes a calling, the buckeyes better answer because a late loss will make it tough to politic their way into this years playoffs. Urban, pick a QB!!!

Bret Bielema– Is there a surgeon on this planet talented enough to extract the foot from his mouth? While he has every right to say whatever he wants to as we live in a free society, sometimes you should just keep your thoughts to yourself. Most people agree with you Bret, the buckeyes won’t play a ranked team until their collision with Sparty but why say it? What did you have to gain by stating the obvious? Superstitious or not, Karma came a knocking on Bielema and the Razorbacks door when the Toledo Rockets out of the MAC shocked Arkansas 16-12 on Saturday. There simply was no excuse for the loss other than Arkansas got outplayed by a nice ball club in Toledo who was without their star RB. Let’s not take anything away from Coach Dansbys Rockets, they’re going to a bowl game this year. But for a team trying to turn the corner and crawl out of the depths of the SEC cellar, Arkansas just stumbled back down the steps. The hype never matched the talent in Little Rock and this was a rude awakening for Coach Bielema and company. Just wait till you play the SEC slate if you can’t focus enough to get a win over Toledo. And let’s not forget that Maryland got embarrassed by Bowling Green of the MAC as well(21 point loss at home). Is the MAC better than we thought? Not necessarily but they have some teams that could win some games in Power 5 conferences.

GEORGIA TECH- My sleeper pick stings another opponent 65-10. Heisman candidate Justin Thomas made another easy day of work passing for 97 yards, 2td’s and ran for another. The shifty QB carried the ball 10 times for 71 yards. Can we let this kid play more than 20 minutes of football please? It’s hard to imagine his stat line once Coach Corbell turns Thomas loose. Matthew Jordan carried the ball 3 times for 72 yards including a 65 yards touchdown run but don’t throw him in the Heisman mix just yet. Long gains are deceiving statistics. Jordan is a nice talent but Thomas is the King bee in the hive. A showdown with Notre Dame looms. Look for the Yellowjackets to make a statement on Saturday in South Bend.

Clearly you are impressed by so so games against so so school and FBS schools beating up on FCS schools. TCU is rolling? They played SFA which is a FCS school they should dominate that game and they will continue to look good in the watered down big 12. They wont play a quality team until the last 2 weeks. As far as Derrick Henry being the best back in the country what are you smoking? he had 96yds and 3 TD against MTSU. 2 of those TD's where for a combined 3 yards. And before you bring up the wisconsin game he had 147 yards on 13 carries. The real statistic to look at is out of those 147 yards 54 of those came on 11 carries. Now on to the biggest disappointing game how in the world could you not say Auburn. If it wasn't for the 14 yard punt at the end of the game they loose to Jacksonville St a FCS school. That couldn't be possible could it? A "Mighty SEC West" school couldn't have need OT to win a game against a lowly FCS school. You need to stop getting your college football insight from the biased ESPN!!!

Not sure what you know about football but, obviously not that much.

First off how do you say a RB "pounded" the other team, he had 96 yds, I mean really? In my opinion (and I'm sure in others) 96 yds and 3td's (IDK how far of runs the TD's were) against a middle of the road mid-major team is really not impressive. They beat MTSU by 27 (OSU beat a far better team by 38 and shut them out). And yes, of course their QB is gonna look good against a less than average team.

Secondly, you are clearly not a fan of OSU in any way, shape or form. They had a bad first half, did you watch the second half of the game, or any at all or just watch the highlights on the biased ESPN? Hawaii has a very good team and could easily win 8 or 9 games! We'll see how much the short week effected them this Saturday as they had a whole week to prepare this time (my guess is they'll look much better). And how exactly did Zeke show he's an extremely limited runner? In case you didn't know, not every play is an 80 yd run! #1 in some polls? I believe they are #1 in every poll. Henry better than Zeke (and it's not even close)? What are you smoking?

So, before you go on a rant about who is who and who is not, know your stuff.

Hmmm....looks like you took some sport articles and dropped a few lines and added some of your own words.
