ODU has eliminated its men’s wrestling program, which was an affiliate member of the Mid American Conference.

It’s other sports teams all play in Conference USA. ODU is losing at least $2 million a year just from being a member of CUSA and so they are looking at leaving the conference. CUSA media rights payouts for this year will be around $1 million less than last year.

The last time I saw figures, the MAC made more money than Conference USA. CUSA used to make more money back before all those teams left for the AAC. When that contract expired, the new contract was for less money than the MAC receives, as CUSA today is now more or less the old Sun Belt Conference. The Sun Belt Conference is more or less former FCS schools today. It's like they all got moved down a chain on the ladder.

The lower tier D1 FBS athletic programs were on financial life support prior to the current contagion crisis. Dwindling attendence, diminishing tv payouts, increased costs make you wonder if even football programs like Marshall or Ohio U will be able to continue as is. Non revenue sports will be dropping like flies, especially mens teams as schools have to keep Title IX balance.
