A new HC at Mount Union

Post by 1987chieftains »

For the 1st time in a very long time there will be no Larry & Vince Kehres prowling the side lines at Mount Union this fall. Vince Kehres has accepted a position on the football staff at the University of Toledo. Geoff Dartt has been named the head football coach at the University of Mount Union. He is a former Offensive lineman that play at Mount Union. I will be interesting to see if the dominance will continue at Mount Union.

I'm not that up to date on Mount Union football, other than knowing how dominant they have been over the years. Was Larry or Vince Kehres the Head coach this past season at Mount Union, also are they brothers, and is Larry still coaching or what is his situation ?

Larry is Vince's dad. Larry played for and coach Mount. he stated as an assistant in 1974 up until he retired in 2012. He is still the schools AD. Vince played for his dad from 1994-97. Then was an assistant from 2000 to 2013 and took over the HC in 2013 to 2019 when his dad retired. Between the two of them they won 13 National titles and have a 427-30-3 combined record. they also boast the high winning percentage in any football division.

Thank you. I kind of thought that Larry had been the head coach. I really didn't know that Larry had retired. Wow, what an overall record, talk about dominating.

I've seen them play many times over the years but never at Mount Union Stadium. DIII is the same as DI as far as schools always at the top. Mount, Mary Hardin-Balor, Wisky/Whitewater St Thomas Aquinas and a few others are always at the top. Every now and then a OAC school catches them napping but not too often.

Great rundown !

Pretty sure Todd Braden from VC went there , played, and won a national Championship.

Played on the 2001 NC team. I'm thinking he owns a record for tackles or sacks.

87. Didn't Katie Smith's brother play for MU? Think I heard sometime ago he did, but can't remember the year. Played on the line. Center or something? Could have been D line, maybe nose guard? Can't really remember.

Younger or an older sibling trench ??

Remember Katie (who couldn’t ). Brother doesn’t jingle any. But I was pretty young child in the 80s

I can most certainly remember some of there playoff games against Wisconsin/Whitewater, who was always a very formable team.

Yes, John Smith is the older brother of Katie. Off the top of my head, 6'3" center played from 1990-93 was on the 1st mount NC team in 1993. That is 1 thing he's got over Katie. He has a NC ring. John is or was the HC at Bexley.

Whitewater has become Mounts nemesis over the years.

I knew someone was telling me that awhile back. Just couldn't remember/brain block. Heard he was tough as nails also. Bull strength.

There's your answer, County. Thanks, 87.

Being that Katie's name has been brought up, Is she still coaching in the WNBA ? Probably will never happen, but I would love to see OSU bring her back as the Women's Head Coach some day.

Think I saw she is an assistant for her old team the Minnesota Lynx. Also her dad was a starter on the line for Ohio Bobcats back in the 60's

Thank you. Still going to keep my fingers crossed as far as the Buckeyes are concerned. The present coach is a great recruiter, but for whatever reason it just doesn't show up on the court.
