Ohio State Suspends All Voluntary Workouts Due To Positive Covid19 Tests

Post by Omega »

From Eleven Warriors:

Voluntary workouts for the football, men's and women's basketball, field hockey, men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball have been shut down indefinitely, according to a statement released by the university on Wednesday.

Ohio State has not released the number of athletes who tested positive for COVID-19, choosing not to share that information publicly “as it could lead to the identification of specific individuals and compromise their medical privacy.”

Per Ohio State's statement on Wednesday, any athlete who tests positive for COVID-19 “will self-isolate for at least 14 days and receive daily check-ups from the Department of Athletics medical staff. Student-athletes living alone will isolate in their residence. If they have roommates, they will self-isolate in a designated room on campus.”

“The health and safety of our student-athletes is always our top priority,” Ohio State's statement concludes.

Not unexpected. Is a 2020 football season simply beyond reach?

Athletic Director Gene Smith said that Ohio State athletes will be tested moving forward and training decisions will continue to be reevaluated by medical staff to protect the health ans safety of all students. An Ohio State spokesperson said voluntary workouts would resume on Wednesday. When Smith was asked last week whether he thought Ohio State would be able to start walk-through football practice on July 24th, Smith said it was to early to say, you literally have to go day-by-day, and week-by-week.

Today, Wednesday marks what is likely the first time since March, that all the players and coaches have been permitted to all be in one place together at one time. And what a time it has been, as all the Buckeye players and coaches are today receiving their Gold Pants and their Big Ten Championship Rings, and after looking at a couple pictures, Wow, what nice rings. New NCAA guidelines will now allow Ohio State football coaches to observe workouts and conduct up to 8hr of activities per week with each player. This seems like a fitting way to celebrate. The players are being awarded Ohio State's Third Straight Big Ten Title Championship Ring, and the 8th consecutive pair of Gold Pants, commemorating the longest Buckeye Winning Streak in the History of the Rivalry.

To support students-athletes and optimize the likelihood for a season, the consistent evidence based measures are to continue to follow CDC guidance, wear a mask, regularly wash hands, socially distance whenever possible, stay home when sick, avoid large gatherings, and prioritize science over politics for a science problem, The Ohio State University has a Covid-19 Transition Task Force in place to ensure a safe campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Dr. Aloiya Earl is a sports medicine physician in Dayton, after a writing hiatus while completing her residency at Ohio State, and fellowship at the University of Alabama, she has rejoined Eleven Warriors as a medical columnist. She'll be writing information articles about injuries, recovery, and the implications of Covid-19 on college athletics and various other sports medicine and sports science topics.
