Marshall players opt out of bowl game in order to prepare for NFL draft.

HUNTINGTON – Running back Brenden Knox is among several key players for the Herd opting out of this week’s upcoming Camellia Bowl to prepare for the NFL Draft. Knox announced his decision Monday via Twitter.

Knox, was named Conference USA MVP following the 2019 season and earned First Team All-Conference honors this year. Knox rushed for 887 yards and nine touchdowns in 2020. For his career, Knox posted 2,852 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Marshall will also be without its leading tackler when it faces Buffalo on Christmas Day. Tavante Beckett also announced he is skipping the bowl game to focus on draft preparations. Beckett led C-USA, averaging 10 tackles per game this season and leads the country with four fumble recoveries.

Offensive tackle Josh Ball, who was name First Team All-Conference this week, is bypassing the bowl game to turn his attention toward the NFL Draft as well.

Marshall is scheduled to take on Buffalo in the Camellia Bowl on Christmas Day. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.

Although the three losses in a row to end the season was disappointing, my thoughts was the Herd 2020 season exceeded preseason expectations, especially after their starting quarterback left just before the season started. Oddly enough, Marshall head coach Doc Holliday's future in Huntington is uncertain. The 63 year old coach's contract expires next June, and some of the Herd backers seem ready to move on despite Holliday's 85 wins in 11 seasons, including a 6-2 bowl record.
