Oklahoma & Texas Looking At Joining SEC ?? ?? ??

Post by Omega »

From MSN:

The hottest story in all of College Football was dropped via a report from the Houston Chronicle. They report that the two BIG12 conference powerhouses, the University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma, have contacted the Southeastern Conference about joining soon.

This obviously means that the SEC could be expanding to a massive sixteen-team conference that would significantly change the pinnacle of College Football.

Over the last year, the SEC has won 8 National Championships across all sports. The SEC has 14 schools and is the home to the defending national champions in CFB, Alabama, along with recent championship wins from LSU and Florida. (excerpt)

Possible playoff expansion. TV contracts coming up for renegotiation. Legal pay for play with NIL. NCAA ineffective.
All reasons for the CFB blue bloods to go their own way. Is a Texas and OU move to the SEC the first step towards and elite super conference of football powers?

IF this Happens.. there will be a Power 4... Cause this would outright destroy the BIG XII. I say that the Remaining BIG XII teams would join the B1G or the AAC... cause those two are literally the cash cows of the BIG XII

Is this story moving from rumor to a done deal:

One pundits take:

Initial reports of a potential Oklahoma/Texas move to the SEC broke less than 48 hours ago. Now, it appears the landscape-altering shift is right on the horizon.

According to Texas insider Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman, discussions about this potential move have been underway for “a minimum of six months.” Reports also indicated the Texas A&M, a former Big 12-turned-SEC program who immediately opposed this proposition, had been kept in the dark about the move until the initial reports broke on Wednesday.

The Texas and Oklahoma move could reportedly become official in a week.

“They’ve been working on this for a minimum of 6 months, and the A&M leadership was left out of discussions and wasn’t told about it,” a prominent Big 12 source said, per Bohls. (excerpt)

To thicken the plot, there are reports that Kansas and Iowa St are inquiring about Big 10 affiliation:

Oklahoma and Texas make it offical, they will not renew their grant of rights (contractural agreement) with the Big 12 when the agreements expire 06/30/2025.

They of course they need to be formally accepted into the SEC, which should be a formality despite Texas A&M's objections. The question becomes will the SEC and OU and UT try to buy out their Big 12 contracts so they can enter competition earlier than 2025.

Not much the Big Ten can do to counter this move. They could, theoretically, try to convince Texas and OU to join the Big Ten instead of the SEC. If the Big Ten contract is worth more than the SEC contract now, that means Texas and OU in the Big Ten would be more money for Texas and OU than going to the SEC.

Big Ten will have to become a coast to coast conference and raid the PAC 12 of its historically elite programs. This is about the only move the Big Ten can make that will keep up with the 16 team SEC. ACC schools are all locked until the mid 2030's, unless teams want to drag things through courts to get out of media rights contracts.

None of the Big 12 leftovers will make a big enough splash to be worth adding, even Kansas basketball.
