Ohio State will kick off their 2022 season with two home matches against non-conference regional opponents this weekend. In addition to some lower level non-conference matches, the Buckeyes will head out west during the second and third weeks of the season to face some tough, ranked opponents in the Pac-12 and Big West. As well as playing two non-conference matches against a very good Penn State squad.

OSU has the #4 ranked recruiting class nationally heading into the season, and they were picked to finished 3rd in the MIVA by fellow coaches.

There have been a couple updates to the schedule for the opening weekend, as Charleston has had to cancel their match with the Buckeyes after some COVID issues within their program. OSU will now play Central State on both Friday and Saturday evening.

The Buckeyes (1-0) kicked off their season on a high note on Friday night by defeating in-state opponent Central State 3-0 (25-16; 25-20; 25-20). Although the Marauders (0-2) played some tough points with OSU, the Buckeyes were ultimately too much. Jacob Pasteur led the scoring attack for the Buckeyes with 15.5 points, while Martin Lallemand tacked on 10 points of his own. Cameron Lee led the Central State attack with 7.5 points.

These two teams will face-off again tonight at 7pm in the Covelli Center.

Getting another crack at Central State (0-3), after sweeping the Marauders on Friday night, the Buckeyes (2-0) delivered another knockout by sweeping again, 3-0 (25-19; 25-17; 25-14). Jaccob Pasteur again led the Buckeyes in scoring with 12 points, followed again by Martin Lallemand with 9 points. Yaron Afek led the Marauders in scoring this time around with 9 points.

It was a thriller, but 11th ranked OSU ultimately fell to #2 UCLA, 3-2 (18-25; 15-25; 25-23; 25-23; 8-15), on the road in the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge on Friday night. It looked as if the Buckeyes had this one easily won after the first two sets, but give credit to the Bruins, as they never gave up and won the next two sets, which were as close as could be, before winning the fifth set to take home the victory.

Leading the way for the Buckeyes, Jacob Pasteur put up a 16.5 point performance. While Samuel Clark (14.5) and Martin Lallemand (13.5) also put up double digit points. For the Bruins, their leading scorer was Ido David with an impressive 17 point performance.

The West trip for Ohio State will continue, as they play one more match in the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge, and play against #12 USC tonight.

The Buckeyes (4-3) had a rough go of it this weekend out in California, competing in the Battle of the Bigs. On Friday night, they played at #3 Long Beach State (5-0) and ended up dropping that contest 3-1 (24-26; 25-20; 25-15; 25-22). OSU put up the point in the first set of the match, followed by a close second set. But, the third set blowout was what carried the momentum to LBSU, although the fourth set was another tensely contested one. Alex Nikolov had an elite performance for the winners with 28 points. Leading the way for the Buckeyes with 20 points was Samuel Clark.

Next up, the second match of the weekend didn't go as planned for the Buckeyes either, as they made the short trip to UC Santa Barbara (4-3) on Saturday evening, yet again falling on the road, 3-1 (25-19; 25-15; 26-28; 25-17). Leading the scoring effort for the Buckeyes was Martin Lallemand with 17.5 points. The Gauchos were led by Donovan Todorov with 13.5 points, while Haotian Xia tallied 13.

Ohio State will now return home, after an extended trip out west. OSU will host Mount Olive on both Friday and Saturday.

The losing streak continued to three games on Thursday night, as the Buckeyes (4-4, 0-1) fell to McKendree in the MIVA opener for the season, on the road, 3-1 (25-15; 25-23; 21-25; 25-22). The Bearcats (4-3) got out to a big lead in the first set, and although OSU put up some tough sets ahead, they didn't have enough to knock off McKendree. Leading the way for McKendree, Patrick Ross posted a solid 18.5 point performance. While for OSU, Jacob Pasteur led the way with 16.5 points.

Ohio State continues their road trip through Illinois with another tough one on Saturday night, as they play at #6 Lewis.

OSU looked much improved in this match, as they were able to keep many of the sets extremely close, but didn't have enough to take home the win. It wasn't a perfect weekend for the Buckeyes, but they did earn a much needed victory, and ultimately ended the weekend with a split. On Thursday, OSU hosted Loyola Chicago, and ultimately fell in a tight one, 3-2 (22-25; 28-26; 23-25; 26-24; 16-14), which pulled their losing streak to to five. But, they did get a little redemption, and potentially some momentum on Sunday with a sweep of visiting Purdue Fort Wayne, 3-0 (25-21; 25-18; 25-23), which gave the Buckeyes their first conference win of the season.

Next up, Ohio State continues conference play with matches against Quincy on Thursday, and Lindenwood on Friday.
