Ohio State to begin offering athletes academic bonuses this fall

Post by Omega »

From WOSU:

Starting this fall, Ohio State University plans to begin offering academic bonuses to athletes.

Technically called "academic achievement awards," the university intends to pay athletes up to $5,980 per academic year -- the maximum allowed under NCAA rules.

Schools have been able to offer athletes bonuses as a result of a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court last June.

In a statement, the university said the payments will quote "make student-athletes’ education more affordable while also incentivizing positive academic outcomes and graduation."

The statement went on to say that the Athletic Department is "dedicated to maximizing the number of students eligible for funding and emphasizing the academic, development and behavioral standards of this policy."

OSU has reportedly budgeted close to $6 million annually to fund the academic incentives.
