Love it or hate it, pay for play in college football appears here to stay.

OSU head coach Ryan Day spoke at a conference of business leaders in Columbus and stated his program needs to have annual corporate funding of $13 million dollars in legal Name-Image-Likeness payments too keep the Buckeyes competive in the new business model for college football.

He mentioned quality recruits can earn $1 million or more in NIL fees given the absence of NCAA rules and the hodge podge of the various state laws.

Day emphasized that TOSU wants to steer a middle ground on NIL offerings. Enough to be competitive with top recruits while maintaining some integrity in the process.

The bottom line for OSU football is that they are in danger of becoming irrelevant if they do not upgrade their pay for play game. NIL may accelerate the top football powers in breaking away from their current conferences and the NCAA and forming their own college professional football league.

Being old, I find this possibility to be sad, but the colleges brought this upon themselves with multi million dollar tv broadcast deals and coaching mega salaries. The question becomes does Ohio State go "all in" in this new environment or will the powers that be at TOSU be hesitant to give up the fiction of student athlete.
