This just broke virtually everywhere in the past 10 minutes....

Apparently the two LA schools could join the B1G as early as the 2024 season.

It's also on every sports site. So many questions are popping in my head right now.......

With the CFB television contracts up for renegotiation, I guess now is the time for schools to cash in through conference realignment.

USCw and UCLA would offer media market advantages for the Big 10, but really do not see any change in competitive balance if the additions do happen.

Don't matter. Michigan manhandles both every year as does Blowhio State and Michigan State. And Penn State. And Wisconsin. And probably Iowa too.

Apparently it is official as the Big 10 has voted to accept Southern Cal and UCLA starting in 2024:

Yep, that makes sense. B1G is due to renegotiate the TV deal soon right?

Yeah, TV contracts are up for renewal so that would be an incentive for schools to get on the Big 10 or SEC bandwagon to get their share of $$.

With Texas and Oklahoma, and now the Los Angeles schools, we might be witnessing the start of an out right pay for play super conference outside of NCAA jurisdiction.

NIL did bring things out into open, but will force the big time college football business model to change in a short period of time.

Can you say the Ohio State University Buckeyes brought to you by Nationwide Insurance? We may not like it, but change is in the wind.

Oregon and Washington are on standby waiting to see what Notre Dame decides to do.

How big will this get?

Since the media payouts will be off the charts, I'm wondering at this point if it makes the most sense to increase conference games from 9 to 10? It will provide more top games for TV and it will ensure teams play each other on a somewhat regular basis.

If it stays at 16, you can easily stay at 9 conference games and play everyone every other year. You can't play yourself, so there are 15 teams to play:

Three rivalry games played each season will leave 12 teams left to play. Play 6 of the 12 in odd years and the other 6 in even years. So outside of your three rivalry games, you play everyone else every other year.

This gets more complicated if you go to 18, 20 or more teams. You almost have to have a 10th conference game.

Why would the Big Ten want to add the travel to California? Makes no sense.

Given that that the Big 10 expects the new tv contracts will pay an estimated $40 millon per year per school over the current $30 million, there are 10 million reasons why the old Big 10 schools will love traveling to Southern California.

I even heard Gene Smith admitting the main reason was money. Same reason they let Rut and Mary in years ago. At least these teams have potential to be more competitive.

Everything is now based on the amount of "eyeball" a school can bring with it (not only TV (including cable) but also the various streaming devices). That is why the interest in Notre Dame. That is also why some schools have little bargaining power. USC and UCLA brought the Los Angeles market but schools such as Oregon State and Washington bring few viewers. If a school can't add value to the conference, the conference will not allow a school that simply lowers the shares of the other schools. The Big Ten has several schools that don't add eyes but the conference will not kick them out but they won't take any schools that don't add something to the revenue figures. I keep wondering if this will also mean in the future that the NCAA sponsored events (mainly March Madness) will also see the major schools pull out and form their own tournament.
