Ohio State AD Begging Fans To Contribute To NIL.Collectivee

Post by Omega »

From Sports Illustrated:

OSU athletic director Gene Smith issued a statement on Thursday morning, asking fans and local business leaders to support the Buckeyes through one of three name, image and likeness collectives.

“There has never been a more exciting time to be a fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes,” Smith said. “Excellence within our programs and remarkable experiences for our student-athletes will always be the standard at Ohio State, while competing for championships, academic excellence and graduating, and preparing for life after sports are our goals.

“Recent guidance updates from the NCAA clarified how schools can be involved in name, image and likeness activities of student-athletes. Many of our Buckeyes are taking advantage of this, and we are committed to supporting our current and future student-athletes while building strong, competitive programs.

“We welcome your help in keeping Ohio State at the top of the college athletics landscape. Three ‘collective’ organizations that are helping our Buckeyes maximize NIL opportunities are in operation and seeking additional support.”

That includes Cohesion, The Foundation and The “O” Foundation, which help connect student-athletes to NIL opportunities

Interesting news. The NCAA did loosen rules where college athletic staff can legally promote donations to NIL collectives:

So is Ohio State just taking advantage of the rule change to stay in the forefront of NIL funding for its athletes?

~~~~~~~~~ or ~~~~~~~~~
Or does OSU need to juice its NIL offerings as the Buckeyes are rumored to be starting to lag other schools in recruiting and roster retention because other schools pay better?
gene may want to check with the football coaching staff to contribute to the cause because they sure and hell didn’t earn those bonuses on 11/26
The College Football Playoff berth secured by Ohio State on Sunday gave coach Ryan Day and his staff just over $2.1 million in bonuses, according to language in their contracts obtained by The Dispatch through a public-records request.
The total is almost a half a million more than if the Buckeyes had missed the playoff and instead landed in another New Year’s Six bowl separate from the four-team bracket.
Day is due $250,000 for an appearance in a semifinal, a matchup with top-seeded Georgia in the Peach Bowl on Dec. 31, raising his total compensation for 2022 to more than $9 million, while his 10 on-field assistants will net about a combined $1.88 million in bonuses.
Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles collects the largest bonus for the trip to Atlanta, one totaling $403,750. The performance incentives for the assistant coaches are worth 21.25% of their base salaries, and Knowles is the program’s highest-paid assistant, earning $1.9 million in his first season after arriving from Oklahoma State.
Offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson receives $297,500, while defensive line coach Larry Johnson and wide receivers coach Brian Hartline see $240,763 and $201,875, respectively.
Most of the assistants’ bonuses are in the six-figures, including offensive line coach Justin Frye at $170,000, running backs coach Tony Alford at $159,375, secondary coach Tim Walton at $148,750 and safeties coach Perry Eliano at $106,250.
The remaining bonuses given to the staff are for quarterbacks coach Corey Dennis at $85,000 and special teams coach Parker Fleming at $63,750.
There is no question that NIL and onetime free agency thru the transfer portal is changing the game we have loved. The various sports sites are rampant with stories of bidding wars and teams potentially losing 25% of their rosters to transfers on top of graduation and players going to the NFL. There are hints that after the playoffs, some Buckeyes will test the waters to see what their market value is. Free market economics has come to college sports. The only way forward to reign in the chaos and restore some regulation is for the colleges to recognize players as employees and reach a collective bargaining agreement to govern all parties involved. I would hate to see it come to that, but what other options are there?
